this will probably unintentionally start a debate but - new wifi hardware isn't fully compatible with legacy hardware. I upgraded to new wifi but it will either drop connection for legacy IOT devices or not connect at all. literally have old router plugged into new router JUST for legacy items. No new items connected to it. No issues vs once a month random disconnects or fiddling around. Shame that migrating will take some money, but dual wifi will be the solution for now.....

Is the prosafe version worth spending more money on?

I plan to buy it and use it with my GL-AXT1800 with WireGuard. It's a powerful "portable" router packed with features but perfectly able to be used as regular router. However because of its size it only has 3 ethernet ports.
In order to expand the number of ethernet ports to connect more devices.

Would using the prosafe version be better when you want to use VPN services or does it not matter?

As someone else noted using a VLAN for cameras, basically it's great for placing all your IoT (smart bulbs, Echo). So many of these devices lack proper security and isolating them to their own network can make it nearly impossible to use them to exploit your connected computers.

The downside is it requires far more tinkering to control said smart devices, but there are tons of resources for using MQQT, etc.

I believe your paying for a better warranty with the ProSafe version - the equivalent ProSafe version looks to be this one:

Note that the switch in this deal and the switch I linked have some managed capability - if all you're looking to do is add more ports and don't need VLANs etc, I'd recommend going with at least an 8 port unmanaged switch - 5 port switches can fill up pretty quickly, given that you'll only have 4 ports for expansion, as one of the 5 ports is needed for the uplink.

The switch in this deal is unique as it has some management capability - if you have a specific use case for that and don't anticipate needing more than 4 ports to expand in to, this is a heck of a deal. If you don't need the managed functions, I'd personally go for more ports on an unmanaged switch.

I don't believe the VPN use case makes a difference in what switches you use.

I am reading some of the reviews on Amazon and the later ones all seem to state you need to purchase a software subscription after 30 days. That would be a game changer for me. Anybody else seeing or know about that?

I believe that's only for remote access/management via a phone app. The three Netgear switches in my house are accessed via a webpage at a local IP that I assigned to them.

Looks like this supports port mirroring, so for anyone that uses a sniffer or other monitoring devices, makes a good cheap ethernet tap. Not a common use case but may be attractive for some.

That's an expensive upgrade for warranty, you could buy like 6 of these for the same price.

Appears to be virtually no difference between the 105e and 305e other than warranty, and considering the price difference, the warranty is not worth it.

Switch will not have any impact on VPN.

In fact it appears the 305 may actually be better as it has larger buffer and lower power consumption (though it depends which version you get, the latest version of both may be nearly identical).

When you set up your Wi-Fi create a second SSID and limit it to 2.4 GHz only, I usually add 2.4 in the name just so I can easily identify it. Connect your legacy devices to that SSID.
