FWIW I have a 980Pro and it runs as fast as they claim. It is mounted flat on the mobo with a heat conducting pad between the top side and a bar of metal. Highest temperature achieved while transferring from an old WD gen3 drive was about 45C. A dedicated heat sink may not be required opening the possibility of the WD Sn850X for $160 (directly from WD). with a certain friendly payment methopossibly oferisignificant cash back and 15% discount if you send them a dead drive (they pay shipping)

Remember this is the one that needs to have an updated firmware version before using or it can brick. As long as you dont mind the hassle of that its one of the best drives for PS5. I went with the SN850X instead mostly because of that.

Does the fw have to be updated if you're only using it with a ps5 ? Only have a MacBook, so I'm not sure how I'd even update the firmware

For what it's worth I bought one from Samsung with heatsink 2 weeks ago and the software was already up to date

Yes. It can become unusable for storage and goes into permanent read only mode. It's most likely the case at this point that you would get one that's already on a newer firmware version and so unaffected, but if you get an older one you'd definitely want to update. And yeah I just didn't want the hassle so went with a different brand. If I'm remembering right you may be able to stick it in a PS5 and if it gives a read speed around 6,500 you are probably good but if it's below 6,000 you're on the older firmware and need to update.

Would this be a good choice for a boot drive on a desktop computer? Will the heat sink get in the way? This price looks good for the pro model.

Depends on the manufacture date. If you have anything remotely recent you're golden already.

Any way to remove the heatsink? Don't need the heatsink.
