Event Horizon is a very underrated movie, much ahead of its time. Laurence Fishburne, Sam Neill, and all the terrific crew. Thanks, OP!
Easily the best thing Paul W.S. Anderson made, though it failed to reach its potential due to the rushed post-production phase that was harmed by his still shooting 2nd unit material during the time he should've been editing and he'd already agreed to a shortened time frame to hit the studio's desired release date. Sadly, the extra footage is lost and there is no way to go back and reassemble a Final Cut version like they did with Star Trek: The Motion Picture which also went out with incomplete VFX and audio mix in 1979.

Once they have stared into the abyss... oh well... Yep, such a travesty he caved that much to studio pressure.
Another underappreciated and ahead-of-time masterpiece of his is the movie Soldier (1998) with Kurt Russell and script by David Webb Peoples, who also wrote scenarios for Blade Runner (1982) and 12 Monkeys (1995). That movie is the single best case for manhood and political conservatism I've ever seen.

The post-production period was a mess because Event Horizon was intended to be an autumn 1997 release, but then Titanic had to be pushed back from its original summer slot to Christmas. With a hole in the schedule, Paramount moved Event Horizon up and instead of the usual 12-15 weeks directors get to do their first cut, Anderson only got FOUR weeks before its first preview and he was shooting the horror stuff as 2nd unit on weekends and the studio had no idea how gory and messed-up it was going to be until the first test screening.
While it's easy to bag on Paramount for rushing things, Anderson went along with it rather than stand on the DGA requirement that directors get at least 12 weeks to assemble their first cut. Whether Paramount could've thrown him off his film and had someone else supervise a rushed edit is unknown, but Anderson probably went along to protect his film best he could.
It's too bad that he's gone on to basically wreck his wife's career for the past 20 years.

That's some interesting details to know, thank you. I wish every SD movie thread was that informative.
I follow Mila's Instagram account, and she can't stop marveling at how great her husband is, how he takes care of their little children while she's being away on movie sets, etc. This all seems true, based on the cute family photos she's regularly posting. Lol, at least they are a very happy couple. I guess living with Mila one needs to be a pure angel.

She obviously falls in love with her directors considering she was married to Luc Besson after The Fifth Element and Joan of Arc, but he's got more good movies on his IMDB than PWSA. When the best Resident Evil movie of the six was one of the ones he didn't direct (Extinction - RE3 - by Russell Mulcahy who did Highlander and the classic Duran Duran videos) then you're a hack.

Pretty funny/slightly-deadpool-style-disturbing Fred Savage scenes, but also a version you could show to the kids. Mostly.
