Still can't bring myself to spend that much on a router that was released in July 2020 (basically 3 months shy of 3 years at this point). I feel like 99-130 would be a slick deal.
I am getting ~ 600-740 Mbit/s download on wireless real world performance throughout the place with 2 AX86S in AirMesh on 5ghz (Ethernet backhaul). ~940 ish download via ethernet (Comcast 1.2 Gbit/s connection). Same on iPhone 13/14. Super stable connection. Netgear CM1100 modem.

RAM is the only real benefit to the AX86U. (outside a 2.5G port if you need it).
Real world performance is too subjective to argue. WIFI range/performance isn't linear for every home.
Edit: My point is that the main 1.8ghz A53 quad core doesn't really benefit 5G radio performance, though it has its uses for internal software. Same case for RAM.
If you have a ton of 2.4G devices, by all means the AX86U is a better router, though it wont work as consistent as models with dedicated CPU radios IMO.
Newer 3x3 6710 seem to be cost down HW relative to previous ACW2 design.
I recommend the newer 4x4+ 4x4 configs if buying gen 2 AX platforms. (6 total cores via dual band design).

mesh is more for larger house. If you are sure you need mesh, you can buy multiple AX86U
I also like the Asus app because you can literally control everything from your phone. I can limit internet access to any device in my home, put bandwidth limits on it, set it to turn off internet access at a certain time each night, etc. I don't actually use any of that but if you have kids and want to limit their access, it has all the tools to do so. As an example, you could set their devices to have no internet from 10pm to 7am every night. That way they aren't sitting up in bed on their devices when they are supposed to be sleeping so they are alert at school the next day. You can also give priority to certain devices so they can hog as much bandwidth as possible, which comes in handy if your downloading a lot of content. Last but not least is the dedicated gaming setting, which I use on my laptop. It really helps with your latency, giving you a flawless gaming experience.
Is there better out there? I'm sure there is, but why waste more money when this does everything I could imagine. No matter if I'm playing World of Warcraft, Call of Duty, Overwatch, Minecraft, etc., it's amazing. Well that and an Alienware laptop, lol
I got a Netgear as my older router and it's going strong after 11 years.
Glad, I switched to Netgear over ASUS there is a big performance difference
also the price is a lot cheaper than ASUS. Also, Netgear is ranked as the top
router brands. ASUS also, has a lot of security holes compared to other brands. Be warned !
The next router better be able to run Chat-GPT or something to compel me to upgrade.
