NATIONAL BESTSELLER • "How did our democracy go wrong? This extraordinary document ... is Applebaum's answer." —Timothy Snyder, author of On Tyranny

The Pulitzer Prize–winning historian explains, with electrifying clarity, why elites in democracies around the world are turning toward nationalism and authoritarianism.

From the United States and Britain to continental Europe and beyond, liberal democracy is under siege, while authoritarianism is on the rise. In Twilight of Democracy, Anne Applebaum, an award-winning historian of Soviet atrocities who was one of the first American journalists to raise an alarm about antidemocratic trends in the West, explains the lure of nationalism and autocracy. In this captivating essay, she contends that political systems with radically simple beliefs are inherently appealing, especially when they benefit the loyal to the exclusion of everyone else. Elegantly written and urgently argued, Twilight of Democracy is a brilliant dissection of a world-shaking shift and a stirring glimpse of the road back to democratic values.

Government (per se) doesn't equate to authoritarianism. It's not the villain, it's an institution representing all of us. It's the type of government and how democratic it is that matters. Many governments around the world provide social safety nets and emergency services that help their people with desperately needed support.

The Senate needs to be eliminated if you want "democracy" along publicly financed elections with zero outside dollars and a public holiday to vote. When everything goes through the house of reps then we can talk about "democracy"

Just a reminder...

The comment section is to discuss the deal, itself, not politics surrounding the deal. Our political section, The Podium, was closed last year so that our efforts could be more focused on our true mission -- the deals.

Please help us keep our community clean by keeping any comments made about the deal itself. Thanks!

Not a very good book, I had a chance to read it recently and it seems more of a propaganda piece than an actual critical look at democracy, republics, and any authoritarian urge that all humans tend to gravitate to. Just not worth the price. If it were free maybe...

I think reading Gulag Archipelago Vol 1-3 would be a better use of time.
