Be advised that att is cracking down on people who use prepaid cards instead of credit cards. They disable auto pay if pay in full using prepaid cards and you lose auto pay credit. Happened to me on my two accounts and also it was discussed on Reddit
It is a worse deal if you get charged tax in your state. My total with tax would only be 5% off $300. Ymmv. I'm just going to buy more target $50 when they're on sale

So this only work on renewal right. First time you sim up using CC and then add prepaid anytime during the term and it auto renewa using prepaid?
No. I signed up 5 months ago and used 6x $50 ATT Prepaid GCs from Target. I had to give a credit card when signing up but the final payment only goes through when you activate, at which time I was able to redeem all GCs.

Can you share the Reddit post unless there more than 1?
I think AT&T is the only prepaid service that charges tax on top of the posted rate. I don't even need a deal to benefit from using prepaid cards, I save on tax alone.
Does this affect those of us w the $300 12mo deal?
I had this two happen two months ago. I got a txt message that auto pay was turned off (luckily before they charged the card). I called and they said my card verification failed (one of those one-cent charges) and that they now do the verification every month, even if you have the prepaid balance.
I turns out my card had been on there so long the address was wrong, probably while it failed. They adjusted that, ran the verification and said I was good to. It worked that month (Feb) -- got autopay discount but used my balance -- and then worked seamlessly (no call necessary) for March, too.
Sample size of one, but that's what I'm seeing with this issue.
