If you know where you want to travel (for the second flight), go ahead and book the primary traveler at whatever fare tier you want. If you are afraid the flight will be sold out by the time you have a companion pass, then book a second seat for the future companion. That way, you have a seat for the companion. If you can, use points for the second seat, as those are fully refundable. Or buy business select if you don't mind having the cash tied up for a bit. When you get the companion pass, cancel the 2nd seat. If there is a seat on the plane, it does not matter fare it is -- you can use the companion pass for it.

Grandma and Grandpa can travel basically for 1/2 off and visit all the grandchildren who live across the country. If the flight is delayed or cancelled they are in no rush to get there. Great deal!

Yea you need to buy a ticket for 8/15-9/30. How would you expect to fly and your companion is free if you don't have a ticket?

If you purchase by 4/5 a flight that is before 5/24, then any flights you book that fly between 8/15-9/30 you can bring your companion for free. You can buy the 8/15-9/30 tickets anytime but won't be able to add your companion until 8/15 as per previous similar promos.

This deal has such a narrow use case for it to be worth the extra cost if you're not already planning to book a trip...which I happen have as I'll be doing a lot of family travel in September. Maybe this promo is to boost some Q2 trends to share later this month in case of a bad Q1.

$80 to rebook a flight with the cost difference. Now need to figure out if I'll even fly during that month the companion pass is valid

Try logging into your account, clicking My Account at the top, and scrolling down to 'My promotions', and the promo is listed as 'Wanna bring a friend for free* every time you fly?' w/ a Register button next to it. If it's not there for you, for whatever reason you weren't included in the promo.
