If you know where you want to travel (for the second flight), go ahead and book the primary traveler at whatever fare tier you want. If you are afraid the flight will be sold out by the time you have a companion pass, then book a second seat for the future companion. That way, you have a seat for the companion. If you can, use points for the second seat, as those are fully refundable. Or buy business select if you don't mind having the cash tied up for a bit. When you get the companion pass, cancel the 2nd seat. If there is a seat on the plane, it does not matter fare it is -- you can use the companion pass for it.

Grandma and Grandpa can travel basically for 1/2 off and visit all the grandchildren who live across the country. If the flight is delayed or cancelled they are in no rush to get there. Great deal!

Yea you need to buy a ticket for 8/15-9/30. How would you expect to fly and your companion is free if you don't have a ticket?

If you purchase by 4/5 a flight that is before 5/24, then any flights you book that fly between 8/15-9/30 you can bring your companion for free. You can buy the 8/15-9/30 tickets anytime but won't be able to add your companion until 8/15 as per previous similar promos.

I was about to cancel and rebook my flight for the pass, but rebooking meant I'd be paying 3x the original price. Check your ticket prices before you cancel. I spoke to customer service and she confirmed I need to cancel and rebook, not just the update/change flight option.

You could fly a round trip everyday with a free companion between 8/15 and 9/30. So "at best" it could be way better than B1G1.

No, the passenger is tied to the Rapid Rewards account so it's not transferable.
In order for you to receive the companion pass, you must be the passenger.
