I noticed a lot of these trendier designs where they want the shape of the pack to look really streamlined. I don't understand it. I also must have a water bottle holder for a pack like this and that aesthetic doesn't allow for it

I like the idea of hydration bladders and use them when cycling, but they always taste weird. Always. That's my big hangup.
I don't have this issue. Here's what I do. I have name brand bladders. I have Camelbak and I think one is a platypus. I don't buy the no-name Chinese direct-to-consumer ones. They might be fine, but I'm not experienced in that. After the trip, I hang the hydration pack upside down in my shower. A dry bladder is one that doesn't have bacterial film growing in it. Finally, I make sure to blow some air through the hose. You don't want to leave those couple ounces of stagnant water. I do not routinely utilize bleach, but in your case I certainly would as you have something going on. I'd mix an ounce or so of UNSCENTED bleach with water in the bladder and clean it out.

I've only never used legit Camelbacks. The issue isn't old or moldy flavor, I'm pretty thorough when cleaning and drying mine. It just tastes like plastic, a sort of vinyl/rubber/plastic flavor.

I have packs of both designs. Honestly, the streamlined ones are MUCH better for hiking through dense brush, as well as scrambling on rocks and even light climbing (eg Class 3).

Yeah, they've gotten trendy, but functionally there's a reason for the design. Bladders are a pain to me, definitely not a direct substitute. I end up either putting the water in the pack or occasionally clipping it to a loop somewhere with a carabiner. Also not great.

To the complainers in this thread about the top closure not being a zip, this is the Daylite Cinch! So it has a Cinch closure. Maybe you should look at the Daylite pack at this link https://www.osprey.com/us/en/prod...1_779.html

It has zip closure, and side water bottle holders

Water bladders have their place. In my normal life it isn't it. They take more care, cleaning, drying, etc to keep going. And a pocket on the side takes anything I can give it, is usable easily washable, and dryable.

I hike with kids. Much easier to pass a bottle around than everyone come be right next to me and drink from the same straw (and for the argument it is all the same bottle you can drink from a water bottle without it being in your lips or tongues all over it).

Side bottle pouches are key and without it I'm not buying it. If you don't want to put water in it put another item you would like easy access to.

Agree. Deal breaker without bottle holders. I find I use my ozark trail 20l (https://www.walmart.com/ip/Ozark-...gn_id=9383 ) over my REI flash 18 because of the bottle holders. Besides when hiking, holders make the pack much more useful when going to amusement parks with kids.

I love my Daylight backpack. It is a great pack for day hikes. I am not sure I like the new top closure. The old model has a zip, the new model seems to have a drawstring and a small flap. Why mess with perfection.
You're thinking about the regular Daylight which is also on sale. This is the cinch model.

All you're doing is introducing mold spores.

Try soaking it with a lemon juice and water mix. I've had good luck with that totally wiping out the taste you describe

There's mold and yeast in air everywhere, so it's obviously a useless thing to point out that drying the pack out well is, "introducing mold spores".

He right. That's why I put my tent away soaking wet and let it sit in my pack until my next trip.

Nope.

There are mold spores in the air. When you air out your bladder, you're just introducing those mold spores.

All you need to do is rinse out your bladder before and after use (particularly the bite valve), and store it in a dark, cool location. You won't grow anything.

I've been using the same Camelbak bladder for 20 years. I have never aired it out. After pulling it out of extended storage, I'll put a drop or two of dish soap in there with hot water, agitate, then thoroughly rinse it. Before every use, it gets flushed with fresh, cold water a couple of times. Nothing has ever grown in it.

Meanwhile, people I've known who obsessively air dry their bladder end up with all kinds of disgusting stuff growing in there.

A tent has absolutely nothing in common with the sealed interior of a drinking bladder. Not remotely similar materials or configuration.

Meanwhile I "obsessively" air mine out and have never had anything gross grow in it.

I'm unsure how you rinse yours out without introducing mold spores.
