A worthy alternative $1,299 at Costco: MSI Katana 15.6" Laptop - 12th Gen Intel Core i7-12650H - GeForce RTX 4060 - FHD (1920 x 1080) - 144Hz - Windows 11

https://www.costco.com/msi-katana...20802.html [costco.com]
No, it is really not. Katana is MSI's budget lineup and has far inferior build quality, extremely poor display and lowered power Graphics card. The deal at $1299 is actually worse than this.

1080p screen instead of 2560x1600.
6 P-cores instead of 8.
RTX 4060 is about 10% slower depending on wattage.

Can't really compare.

More ssd capacity though.

As in "in 6 months I might upgrade and don't want to lose too much $ when I sell" or "I am trying to flip it for profit now"? Because if it is the latter, you must have been in a cave the last 6 months for even asking that question.

I had a legion 5 pro with 500GB of space and it just didn't cut it, 1TB minimum as a casual gamer. Otherwise, it's a superb machine.

The Lenovo site says up to 32gb memory supported. Does this laptop come with two 8gb sticks with one soldered or both unsoldered?

I am just trying to figure out if I should get a 32gb stick.
Thanks.

Sale ends in 3 hours! How's Newegg's return process, is it really hassle free? I'm about ready to jump unless they don't honor this or folk's have had bad experiences. TIA

edit: ordered. Thanks OP!

edit2: sale did not end! Not sure why it said "Sale Ends in 3 Hours" when I was on the product page yesterday, they could've extended the sale.

AMD, like the one in this deal. I've observed the same thing while researching the issue on various places. It is about $20 for the intel card, but honestly the worst part is opening up the notebook. You can ride with the mediatek one more than likely, but even stuff like a fresh install of Windows 11 won't recognize it. It is fine once the driver is installed from the Lenovo web site, but just another inconvenience.
I, too, have heard about this problem with the Mediatek card (RZ616). I have a Micro Center config version of this Legion 5 Pro, with the same SKU just with more RAM and bigger SSD, and by the draw of luck my unit has never experienced this particular problem. It does have the same Mediatek card. It's good to know that replacing with an Intel card fixes it.

Is this worth the money over a $1000 G15 Strix (2021)?

Asus Strix G15 Link:

I recently bought an open box G15 for $1K but it hasn't been delivered yet. Wondering if the Lenovo is worth the extra $300.
I can't speak specifically to the G15 but I have bought mid to top tier gaming laptops for a decade now similar to this one. The prior gen with the 5800H is far and away my favorite laptop ever. Just everything about it is great. Ports are almost all on the back (If you haven't had this yet it's huge), the screen is gorgeous and so bright I usually have to turn it down even in daytime with a window behind me. Cooling is great, keyboard is solid and the build quality means if I move it one handed I never get paranoid it's going to "break" lol.

Just can't say enough good things about the Legion 5. Mine also has the best battery life I have personally had in a gaming laptop with 4~ hours off charge. This model with the 6800H should be even better by a decent bit on that. 6800H is faster, cooler and better on battery.

man i am on the fence between this vs Alienware M18 (double the price i know) but these 2 laptop has almost everything i need, QHD screen with numbpad and not super in your face RGB

i love alienware warranty support but screen at 300nit and its 18 inch
i love lenovo for solid build not sure if this is the same 500nit screen just 2 inch smaller

wonder if they both can be recharge by USB-C? not for gaming but for doing excel/web browsing
This has the 500 nit screen with HDR. It's absolutely fantastic, first time I have had a screen bright enough that I don't have to have it turned all the way up all the time.

If you're on the fence about this one -- get it while you can. Notebookcheck has this 150w 3070 Ti neck and neck with the 3080 Ti in the Alienware x15 R2. They're getting every single bit of performance out of this chip. I know shopping for laptops with high powered dedicated graphics can be intimidating because poor cooling or low wattage can neuter performance, but not here, this thing is a monster. Paired with a 6800H which gives very solid battery life and you've got a really good combination.

I posted that one and I eventually decided to pay the premium to go with the Legion 5 Pro for the mux switch, and overall better build quality, and JerrodTech had the intel variant as one of his top rated laptops of 2022. I was really close to picking up that G15 though, the lack of mux switch and the more premium feel which I guess is subjective put me over to the L5P.

Depends if you want to spend the extra money, and need things like DLSS. 6800m trades blows with the 3080 in some tests, while getting obliterated in a lot of productivity software due to a lack of "proper support". As I posted earlier, the 3070 Ti in this specific model holds its own against the 3080 Ti in the Alienware x15 R2. Also, it's well documented that the 6800m model in question has a lot of heating issues. Things to be aware of.
