Really hope M2 Pro model drops to $1000. from $699 to $1199, extra $500 for a better CPU, more ports on the case, extra 8GB RAM. Apple sales team is really smart or shrewd.

No desktop should have only 512gb. Shame on apple and I have all Apple products.
Even I used to be a Windows guy, I think for Mac, 512GB is fine (esp. if you are not playing games). Grab an external TB4 enclosure and add some NVME there.

These are awesome but such a waste to build them with 8GB. Like, a crime against humanity. Yes, they're totally fine for a lot of things, but they have such potential and 16GB vs 8GB is such a small thing to do these days, on a premium product that has astounding performance. Really bad call to intentionally cripple such a stellar performer on purpose.

I've found 8 GB plenty for basic stuff (Preview, Photos, Mail, Music, BBEdit, Numbers, Pages, etc.) Sadly "casual internet browsing" outstrips them all in RAM usage. A single tab can easily get to over 1 GB. I probably should up my ad-blocking/anti-tracking game.
What kind of sites are you "casually" browsing? I have the same machine and for work I constantly have more than 2 dozen various Chrome tabs open and I've never ran out of memory. Only time it happened was when I also had Civilization 6 running at the same time.

The 256 GB storage option is cheaper at $499 but as an Amazon reviewer noted: "… 256GB configuration is slower than 512GB because it only uses one SSD chip instead of two so the memory bandwidth is half that of the 512GB."

Too bad as that's such a wide cost discrepancy.
It's theoretically true but if you are a casual home user you won't notice the difference. i double a lot of average joes are constantly writing multi-gig files everyday.

Given how Apple structures its pricing I'd much rather have less on a desktop like this and just add my own via TB4. Won't notice a difference in performance most of the time and costs waaaaay less.

It costs much more to build in more RAM since the M series chips have unified memory. And it's only $500 for 8/256 and $690 for 8/512, hardly "premium" tier. For the price the performance still can't be touched.

It's sad that my 2012 has 8GB of ram and this one has 8GB. I understand it's faster and I probably only need 8GB since I just want to use it as a media server, but I find it funny, that in 2023 we're still using 8GB of ram.

Yep would rather have more ram vs storage for the premium. Storage is much easier to add with external drives.

I got an m2 pro 512ssd and maxed out 32GB of ram to have this last me as long as my old 2015 MBP base model. I also sometimes have multiple windows of live sports streaming and wanted the headroom for that. Web browsing with 10-15 tabs of chrome or safari, a YouTube video playing, and spotify or Apple Music app open and I am using 20ish GB of ram. I don't think that is too intensive or a special use case. Guessing the browser extensions are eating up the memory but I also don't know how the unified memory works specifically that differs from my experience with traditional tan; if it's just using any available unused ram for performance.

8Gb on Mac is not the same as 8Gb Windows

But some folks are content with using crippled inefficient software so just throw more ram at it lol

Um...a single tab is eating up a gig? Are you sure about that? Sounds like something's wrong. Are you sure you don't mean a single browser window with multiple tabs? I'm a gig pig, but I have maybe 60 tabs open before my ram starts to tank.
I should have been clearer, SOME sites will use a ton of RAM for a single tab in Safari. I'll try to get some specific examples next time I'm at my Mac.

you're focusing a little too much on the tech and not what it does. alternatively one could say they're surprised we use RAM at all anymore. maybe in another 10 years if/when it is all unified we won't even call it RAM.

you could go with the base model for that, or a refurb M1.

Anyone care to make a suggestion for a monitor to pair with this (consistent with the $690 price tag)?
