For clarification: yes this is the M2, BUT it has the proper ssd that is equal to performance of last gen, aka not neutered like the base m2 model is. RAM: yes it's the base 8 gb. This works fine for most people. If you require more, you probably require more power also for your workflow.

These are awesome but such a waste to build them with 8GB. Like, a crime against humanity. Yes, they're totally fine for a lot of things, but they have such potential and 16GB vs 8GB is such a small thing to do these days, on a premium product that has astounding performance. Really bad call to intentionally cripple such a stellar performer on purpose.

I have an M1 iPad that never wants for more RAM.
It is a huge upgrade from my old one that only had 4GB.
I've not used macOS but assume it is more resource hungry than iOS?
For casual internet browsing I'd guess that 8GB should be more than plenty?
I am thinking that at this price point and with proper SSD, it may finally make sense for me to grab a Mac?
I've found 8 GB plenty for basic stuff (Preview, Photos, Mail, Music, BBEdit, Numbers, Pages, etc.) Sadly "casual internet browsing" outstrips them all in RAM usage. A single tab can easily get to over 1 GB. I probably should up my ad-blocking/anti-tracking game.

i guess opinon varies by people but heard Apple stopped the production of M2 meaning they are stuck with its inventory at the market. and not much good news about M2 performance w/ SSD issue so just gnu sit and wait for me

Um...a single tab is eating up a gig? Are you sure about that? Sounds like something's wrong. Are you sure you don't mean a single browser window with multiple tabs? I'm a gig pig, but I have maybe 60 tabs open before my ram starts to tank.

Background processes plus many tabs of the modern web will eat 8gb quickly enough. Charging so much for 16 really is criminal. If you really want to save though, you may as well get the 256 model and add cheap storage yourself, given that that one is going for just $500.

Yikes - that is regrettable to hear.
It seems like ad blockers are going the way of the dinosaur too...
I haven't seen anything great in years regardless of OS.
Not sure who all to blame about that, but I'm currently mostly just browsing without any assistance from them.

The 256 GB storage option is cheaper at $499 but as an Amazon reviewer noted: "… 256GB configuration is slower than 512GB because it only uses one SSD chip instead of two so the memory bandwidth is half that of the 512GB."

Too bad as that's such a wide cost discrepancy.

I just bought two of the base model for $499 each EDU pricing (Apple doesn't verify). I suppose if you really want to buy from Amazon this is comparable but not really a deal when EDU pricing is available to all, all year round.

Might make some people angry but 8gb is more than enough for regular tasks on mac os. Can't say the same thing for Windows. Also, yes, there's slower ssd speeds but most people who are buying a $499 machine wouldn't notice or wouldn't be doing anything that extensive to run into issues.
