Global knives are love/hate because of the handle. People either love it or hate it. I would say don't buy this unless you've held it in person.

Do a little research on forged vs stamped, but general rule of thumb is forged is better than stamped in terms of quality and durability. That being said the consensus of the internet is that Global are the exception to the rule where they are exceptional for being stamped.

I own this set and I would reach for my wusthof or zwilling first. I prefer the heft of them in my hands.

Again according to the internet: a chefs knife and a pairing knife (and in my opinion, a bread knife which could just be a cheap one) can satisfy 90% of the needs of most home cooks.

Here's some suggestions:
Wusthof Santoku, Japanese style knife for push down and forward cutting. Though the brand and steel itself is German. Wusthof is top tier consumer before you get into the crazier stuff.

Zwilling, another top tier consumer, with a traditional western style that's for more of a rocking style cutting. I love the bolter on their pro line. Perfect for pinch grip.

And last but not least, Victorinox Fibrox. No personal experience but people all over swear by this stamped budget pick.

Thanks! Actually pulled the trigger on this deal based on reviews and other prices seen. That Victorinox might be nice to add too especially if Pat La Freida etc actually use the brand. Is that knife in the link available? Tells me to choose color but not seeing the prompt

Oops I guess it may not be available, I just googled the knife and picked the cheapest from a reputable seller without digging deeper.

Amazon and restaurant stores also sell it. Just make sure it's the Fibrox line. I think woot also occasionally has them on sale.
