It's not always just about the food for yourself. Some people enjoy gardening, some people want to have additional greenery in their yards that have the additional benefit of being edible, some people want to encourage pollinators in their yard, some people want to simply be a bit more self-sustainable, etc. So, sure maybe it's cheaper buying at the local market, but there are tons of reasons to grow your own food.

I've got 7 raised beds that are this same galvanized steel in my backyard, and mine are roughly this depth. Most of mine came from Northern Tool, and I posted a deal on their beds last year but it never made it to the front page. My beds have square ends versus this one with the curved ends. I have some beds that are 3' wide and some that are 4' wide, and I much prefer the narrower bed. Reaching across the 4' bed is difficult without getting in the bed.

I have roughly 240 sq feet of space and grow tons of vegetables. Right now mine are filled with tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, squash, radishes, and pole beans and I've got plenty of room left for other stuff, but since I grow a lot of stuff vertically, I have to be mindful of shade (cattle panels from Tractor Supply make great trellises). I've had some of my beds for years and some are newer. They've held up really well even though I'm in a very hot and humid environment on the Gulf Coast. I wouldn't hesitate to buy this one if I needed another bed.

It is expensive to get started if you're buying the soil to fill these. I had a friend in the tree cutting business, and he dropped off a dump-truck load of wood chips. I filled mine half way with wood chips to get started then topped that off with soil. I have a nice sized compost pile now, and grass clippings and leaves go into that all year. I also go get free horse manure to mix with the compost and top the beds off with that every season, and it doesn't cost me anything much except some gas money for the horse manure. There are plenty of ways to cut down on the cost of gardening but they do take time and labor, but working in the garden is not work to me. I find myself drawn to the garden when I should be doing something else. For me, it's a healthy addiction.

Agreed, you'll need a few of these. I personally go for taller beds that can grow deeper-rooted veggies (I have gophers so I need to wire the bottoms).

I recommend any of the Square Foot Gardening teaching by Steve Bartholomew to maximize your yield.

I purchased this product about a month ago. You cannot plant many plants in it. This product is too small for my desire. The quality of the metal is pretty good and very easy to set up. For $40 it is worth it, but I will be buying a larger garden to satisfy my needs.

18" minimum height should be standard to be honest. This height is only really useful as a flower bed.

By the time you buy this, add the soil, fertilizer, water, pest control, time, and so forth unless you are doing it as pure hobby. Buying at the local farmers' market works out to be just as cheap.

Hmm torn on this. It feels like a better deal that my plans to build with 'planter pavers' that would go on the corners, with 2*6s in between. Each planter paver costs $3.40, and getting to a height of 12" would require 8, ~$32 total before the cost of lumber in between.

That being said, OPs planter cannot be stacked, cannot be extended without more bracing. Not to mention my placement is against a fence, and quick mowing/trimming is easier with straight lines.

Unless you're growing carrots, and other deep root forming veggies, I'm unsure if 18" is really necessary.

Little small/shallow for my needs, but seems good for the price if the metal is decent.

Considering metal for some more beds as my 2x wood beds have rotted on the shaded side and all need to be replaced

It had an open bottom so shallow shouldn't be and issue. Your plant roots can go as deep as they need to. Unless you're talking about having to bend down.

I just ripped out one of my boxes. I had used six 8' cedar fence boards (cut two for the ends and you have a 4'x8' rectangle); they lasted a respectable 8 years. I replaced by other (rotted) box with some used pavers I found on FB marketplace. So if you're not down with this size you can easily scale either pavers or fence boards to your liking.

My boxes always did well for my needs. Multiple eggplants, lots of peppers, the occasional tomato, and tons of herbs. Louisiana heat=giant basil bushes.
