My neighbor was a golf course expert of some kind and had me walk around the drip line of all of his trees a couple times a year and drive a 1 inch spike a few inches down every few feet. Drop in a few spoonfuls of slow release fertilizer pellets. His trees were maybe 3 times bigger than all the other trees in the neighborhood (established maybe 10 years prior). I don't think it matters much how you do it, but regular fertilizer does help trees grow bigger, faster, just like other plants.

Just planted a apple tree from recent Home Depot deal. Is buying this necessary? Does it make growth a little faster? Although it looks like may not get my apples for at least a year or two

just buy a bag of tree-tone and scratch some into the soil 2-3 times a year. It'll last you longer with the same effect

I've always used Jobes fertilizer spikes but the tree and shrub version is some 18 bucks almost twice what I paid late last year. So I'll give this one a shot even though it's three fewer spikes.

The problem with these is they soften up and are hard to hammer down without making a big mess.
