Here in Costa Rica, I can buy 12-12-18 (NPK) fertilizer for about $3 a kilo, $1.36 a pound. Likely something similar in the US, and they won't ship it to me anyway, like it's some kind of nuclear material. For the possible slight shortfall of Nitrogen, it's the most common element of air, and plentiful in all manures.
The spike format is nice, set it and forget it, but I can't imagine that punching a hole with a stick and filling it with granules and using a bit of manure, brown or green, isn't substantially the same, and a lot less expensive.
