You may be quoting idle speeds with older AMD drivers. I believe AMD has been working on fixing the high idle usage. https://videocardz.com/newz/updat...ited-games
The article states idle speed is still 54W. It's still higher than 4080. The article claims 4080 idles at 30 W. Nvidia says 4080 uses 13 W at idle. https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/gefo...s%20cards.

If we go with your numbers -- I believe you mean 100 kWh. Energy usage is measured in kWh not kW. Capacity is measured in kW. Your retail energy provider charges you based on energy, kWh. To convert your idle usage of 120-140 W, you need to multiply that by hours. So let's say your computer is on 8 hours, you take the 120W-140W x 8hrs = 960-1120 Watts per day. Now, you multiply that by days of the month, eg., 30 days, which would equal 28,800-33,600 W per month (28.8-33.6 kWh for the month). Depending on where you live, let's assume it's your rate is 15 cents per kWh. Multiplying your 28.8-33.6 kWh x 15 cents = $4.32-$5.04 per month. If you leave your computer on all day - 24 hours, multiply by 3, and you'd have $12.96- $15.12 per month. That's a lot of money over the course of the year.

I think your use case is quite unique. I dont think many people would buy a $1000 and leave it on idle all years long? I figure most people into gaming would buy it and play games 3-5 hours a day then turn off the computer after at night, go to work during day and come back to play games. That would be a more likely scenario. At regular gaming load, the electricity cost is negligible at best.

60fps in MW2 would have been a dream on my Pentium MMX. Not a problem with a 3DFX card.

At idle, cant beat intel + nvidia power consumption at the moment. So if you leave your system on 24/7, that combo has the advantage.

This is...better. I had a new build, first one ever on my own, with an XTX but after hearing people say to wait it out, I think I still want to build now and will just get a 6950XT. Techspot had a 12 or 24 game fps average for all the high end and most mid range cards and I was OK with the delta from an XTX and 4080 for the 6950.

Microcenter has a good deal I think on that. I may skip their 3 in 1 bundle and get a 7800x3D and other parts separately from the savings.

Not a fan of these inflated prices for either 6950XT & 4070TI but I haven't seen benchmarks nor prices to support these statements. Mind sharing your source, or are these just ancedotes?

Just look at YouTube vids. A 6950xt is like 600ish$.
The 4070ti is on par if not worse, and the 7900xt is leaps ahead…

That is a moot point. You said less than 200, which means that my original range completely applies to the point you're trying to make. If you think it's just "some of us" that could be 500k or more of the millions of gamers out there
To push out 144 requires far less horsepower than the 7900 xtx. You could get away with a 6 series doing that no problem. 200+, yes this would be applicable. But for the vast majority, it doesn't make sense when the drivers still aren't stable on either Windows or Linux. I asked around and people with multi-monitor setups are STILL idling around 90 watts, which is absurd for idle.

I got a 4080 gigabyte gaming oc on the way open box at bestbuys for 936 plus tax. Good deal but i wish i got a 7900 xtx open box for 100 cheaper cause amds card is faster in raster. Dont really care much for rt but the extra vram is way better in the future. We just dont know if 16gb vram will be enough in next two years with the way things are headed.

The 4080 is way too thick for the power it draws. Wish they were thinner.
If only the xtx is 900.

You mentioned 6950XT destroys 4070TI in a lot of titles. Now that you say it's on par, that I'd agree (for raster). The benchmark in the YT is similar to other benchmarks out there.

nah it does destroy it in a good amount of titles. I said it to piss the other guy off with the original comment. I'm well aware of how it performs, it's marginally slower, but some titles it's vastly faster..it's also an older gen card..he said the 4070 destroys the 7900xt as well..as you can see that's not even remotely true.
either way a 4070 is gimped on vram, and is overpriced

Pay a little more and get Nvidia. Higher resale value, far less little compatibility issues, every game/mod use Nvidia as test bed.

AMD is stuck in a tough spot. 4070 eats the lunch of all 6800-6900 cards. 4070TI destroys 7900XT. Anyone who can afford this card is better off buying the $1150 4080. They are destroyed by Nvidia at every segment.

Nobody buys AMD unless they are 30% cheaper than Nvidia equivalent.
I've yet to go AMD. However, the 4070 does not eat the 6950xt. 4070ti actually loses to the 6950xt as well in a few cases. Loses to the 7900xt in basically everything. Does this mean I'm gonna go AMD? No, I'm too used to Nvidia software and I don't want all the extra heat that the amd cards put out. But I'm not huffing any copium either; I'd suggest looking up benchmarks.

I've been playing on my GF's rig with a 6950xt and it completely slaps my 3080 in any of the high fps games I like to play at 1440p right now. Especially COD and Fortnite by a pretty huge margin and my 3080 can't play any of the new games on ultra with Ray tracing over like 30-40 fps 🤷. It's got me rethinking my upgrade.

I heard about how much better Hogwarts is for Nvidia cards but found out that's only with raytracing on and my 3080 only gets like 25 fps with that on. Was pretty sad to find out that's one of the strongest AMD games out now. A 7900 xtx actually matches or beats a 4090 with Ray tracing off somehow 😔.

The AMD cards can't do 8k VR 3d videos tho, some kind of driver problem. Can't get it to work on hers at all 😏. Plays VR games great, videos are a stuttering slideshow tho.

The 7900XT/XTX are on A0 silicon, there are some features disabled on the die. I wouldn't be surprised if those disabled transistors are still drawing power. Basically there's no way to fix it on driver until they make a silicon revision.

Yeah I'm calling bs on that article, mine is idling 22w using the latest driver on Linux.

What's so funny? People are buying a $1,200 Iphone and they're not complaining about the price. LOL. I can put together a rig with an i9-14700k, a 4080 or 7900 xtx, 32gb of ddr6 ram, 4tb of nvme, Seasonic 850watts gold power supply and case, AIO 360mm cooler, and a 20TB HD for around $2K+/- 100/200 bucks -- I don't just don't have the need for it. My parents bought me the IBM Pentium II ~1997 when I was in middle school and the whole system cost over $3K when they were making like $6-7 an hour.
