$1.99 for an equivalent type at Harbor Freight. Works just as good too!
I'll stick with Bic
I had a couple of the official Boy Scouts of America branded version of this back in the early-late 90s. Use with mounds of saved dryer lint and you're in business. Can still taste the aluminum foil pouch meals filled with bits of hot dogs, chunks of potatoes, and chopped carrots and onions inside. Good times.

3-pack of mini Bic lighters are good to have on hand. Much more useful and same price.
I keep a bunch in a drawer, sometimes they leak. Even empty, they throw a good spark.

Don't expect to use the compass for any real navigation, but having a ferro rod like this is worthwhile.

Use an Altoids tin or something similar to make your fire kit. Put in waterproof matches, ferro rod, a piece of hacksaw blade for a striker, a small pencil sharpener to make shavings from sticks, and a zip-lock bag with cotton balls saturated with petroleum jelly. When starting a fire, tease out one of the cotton balls and if any sparks fall on it you get a nice size flame for a minute or more. Costs very little and is easy to pack to always be able to make fire.
Yep, and that tin is the backup to your 2 new bic lighters which will serve you 99% of the time. like any skill, fire making takes practice. Use your gear under controlled, non stress conditions to the point it becomes second nature. That way, if you truly are in an emergency situation, muscle memory and patterns take over and you are more likely to succeed.

The coupon gave me $2 off, but they added $4 for shipping. Thanks anyway, OP.

They will work wet, if the tinder is dry or really combustible, like a fuel pellet.

The Harbor Freight ones are garbage. Yes, they can work, but barely. I've had a dozen boys at scout camp trying to start fires with them and it's extremely hard. Get a higher quality one, and it's easier and faster to get a fire going. I speak from many hours of experience with them.

In the movie Into the Woods, it gives a great reason to have this and it's why I'm looking into it. However, I don't think i want to survive that long to where I'll have to resort to this over insta flame.

Also, I'd stick with liquid filed compass. I read that other compasses on flints like this shipped dry and didn't work.
Quote from SharpSardine8228 :
These can be fun, but suck in a real emergency. Getting a frame takes lots of practice, low wind, and the right tinder. Not practical in most situations.
Sorry dude but clearly you do not know how to use these properly or have not practiced even a little????

You are supposed to shave a portion and drop it on the tinder after you amassed a shaved pile than you use the striker to send a spark into the pile and it will burn igniting your tinder.

I have and can start a fire with these types of products in under 1 minute if I have the tinder already collected.

These are better than any match or lighter in an emergency cause those can break, this you cant really break and if you know how to use, you can set just about anything on fire with enough magnesium shavings.

Why aren't you paying $1 for a bic lighter and have a continuity plan of I don't know, a second $1 bic lighter.

Lighters and matches are always preferable, but what happens when they run out, or get wet. It's nice to have options if you are thinking with a survivalist mindset.

I have a couple of this brand from a few years ago. Large enough to be easy-ish to hold and much easier to use than the really cheap, tiny, ones. They're the go-to ones for the Scouts to light a campfire and have held up well.

That's what I was going to say. It's just not really better than what Harbor Freight has to offer, especially considering that magnesium is really the only part that matters.
