ball up some paper towels and put them behind a few of the firebox pieces to keep them somewhat upright. once you get a few in position, it's pretty easy to get the ring installed. then you can get the paper towels out (with a screwdriver, etc) or let them burn off...

i use this method on my classic with no problems but for some reason, the bj3 does not want to cooperate with me.

That is a 10in kamado, which is significantly smaller than this one. I own a Joe Jr and a 10in and can vouch the size difference is significant.

Perfect for a couple with no kids. I have a jr and classic II, love them both just depends on the piece of meat or number of people

"Portable"

Seriously, wait for Walmart to put the Akorn Jr on clearance in the fall. Got mine for $60 and it's by far my favorite grill

I bought at 299 in early covid and am a very happy customer. Heats faster, uses less coals..! Only con is the size.

Honestly, not a fan, or at least do not recommend for first kamodo-style grill. I got it for my first, and I am very challenged at getting to meaningful temps. Basically, less room for error the smaller the grill.

After research, I'm not the only one having similar issues with the Jr, and the common recommendation is to get Kick Ash basket to improve airflow, which is a non-trivial fraction of the grill price bringing it at least close-ish to the larger size models.

If you want a portable smoker, check out the weber smokey mountain. It'll hold way more food and is lighter, etc.

I have a regular kamado joe for at home, and take my WSM on vacation.

I also have both. WSM goes on trips and large parties/meat cuts. Joe Jr is my every other day grill. Keep it clean and don't overfill it and it will work great. I use lump most of the time, but I've been experimenting with charcoal logs from B&B and I like them. I'll say again: clean and do not overfill with fuel, that is important for air flow.

I picked up one on a Walmart deal a couple years ago. It gets more use than my larger Kamado. Often I am only cooking for 2 and this little grill is great for that. It heats up quick and does the job well. It is very efficient on charcoal usage. I did add an ash basket and did pick up a soap stone cooking surface. I highly recommend this grill if you frequently cook for only a couple people.

I don't give money to China any longer because of their South China Sea craziness and their love affair with Russia. 🤷 ♂️

I owned the Jr. for about 1 year, sold it, and switched to classic II. Definitely regret it...
Jr. is perfect for grilling for 1-4 people. It gets hot fast and does not use much lump charcoal.

BGE devotee, but an Akorn mini gets as much use as it heats faster and when we're not cooking for 4 is a better size fit.
I don't think any kamado today sucks - pull the trigger on one and you will add more over time.

I did get this when it was walmart deal at $199. I live in a condo with a small private patio. The size is just perfect, I have cooked using this for friends and Thanksgiving dinner for 10+ people. I like that I can easily carry this to a park and friends house on my own. Cleaning is a breeze (fire up at full blast, everything turns to ash). I'm no guru but I have made really nice steaks, tri-tips, tomahawks, chicken roast, dino ribs, KBBQ LA style, several prime ribs (fits about 3-4 standing ribs). I don't have to use a lot of charcoal to keep it hot. The only smoking I have done with Jr. is just a few blocks of apple wood or hickory. At a friends place, I used my Jr for reverse-sear steaks and final hot sear with a cheap weber. At $199 it was absolutely the best value!
