after drilling the hole, if the wall is open and you need to fish wire through the drilled hole, you can leave your bit through the drilled hole and tie your wire to the tiny hole in the bit to pull the wire back through when pulling your bit out. it can be especially helpful when drilling through multiple stacked 2x4s.

You guys suggesting to use conduit instead of drilling holes are completely missing the reason this bit is called an "installer" bit. It's made for telephone/coax/cat 5 wires to be installed by field techs, usually in existing structures.

What does "hole in flute design" mean and how do I use it?

if you look at the picture of the drill bit, there is a hole in the middle or the 2nd turn of the bit allowing you to tie a string or wire to fish your line through after drilling the hole.

If one had the choice it would seem preferable to install conduit and possibly the wiring before the walls etc. are finished so one wouldn't have to do much drilling / pulling etc. afterward.

I agree with Quixotic. Use low voltage conduit and run your wire in there. Low voltage conduit isn't very expensive. And also leave an extra pull line in the conduit for the future. And remember, no hard bends for both ease of pulling wire, and because it is horrible for data transfer.

I need to make a 4inch hole thru exterior siding/wood for new dryer vent. Should I buy this to make a pilot hole, and then follow thru with a 4" inch hole saw?

You're missing that they were responding to a poster planning to use this during new construction, when installing conduit would make more sense from a serviceability/future-proofing perspective.

Glad I checked my old emails, apparently I have a 24" long 3/8 bit that is very similar from Irwin from a prior WOOT slick deal, lol, I knew I had one but couldn't remember what size/length.

Probably not, you'll end up with a hole that is bigger than the pilot bit so the hole saw won't track as well going in the pilot portion plus as an installer bit this likely has some flex to allow you to drill through an opening in a wall down through the base plate/top plate etc so you wouldn't even end up with a straight pilot hole.

You can buy regular twist drills in long lengths. I'd buy one long enough to go through your stud wall, inside to outside. Also use same size or smaller, as pilot bit on hole saw
