I got four of these when they were a buck each last year.

Simple to unlock with eBay unlock codes.

The guy I used was "unlocker-pro".

He charges $1.50 per code but I think I offered $1 each for four codes and he accepted my offer.

Search for: "Alcatel LinkZone Modem MW40 MW41 MW43TM BT70 L850V Y800Z Network Unlock Code"

This is the way I remember doing it:

1. Change the SIM with another network provider's SIM.

2. Connect to a PC with a USB cable.

3. Open the WebUI of the Alcatel LinkZone 2.

4. If prompted, log in with the admin.

5. It will prompt for unlock code.

6. Enter the unlock code from eBay

7. Now your Alcatel LinkZone 2 will be unlocked permanently.

I don't see any reason to activate it at all.

Just get the unlock code from eBay and follow the instructions to unlock and you're good to go with any SIM, no matter where in the world you're at.

PS: From what I remember if the unit does a firmware update you'll just have to reenter the unlock code again. I printed out my code and put the little piece of paper under the battery in case I ever need it again.

It depends on the color of the SIM you receive:

Orange/White SIMs use T-Mobile
Black SIMs use AT&T

Boost Mobile (also Ting and Republic Wireless) are owned by DISH Network; but they don't own the underlying telecom infrastructure. So, they end up piggybacking on one of the big3's networks.

Can I get a number, too? I am seeking a phone number, which I can use to register on a bunch of sites instead of giving my primary number. Google number gets rejected on many sites, so I'm looking for a real phone number with a small data plan, text, calls, etc.

Any idea as their partner? I am with Google fi and Google fi said buying a different phone will help my crappy service, but all it did was lock me into an unbearable lack of coverage with Google fi's t-mobile network.

If I don't activate the sim, does that mean I'm getting the hotspot for the $10 and if I unlock it, I can use any sim/prepaid plan I want? No recurring $10 monthly charge to Boost?

I got this when it was on sale last time. I was able to unlock the device and installed a Verizon sim with no problem.

Had that issue with my Google number. Mine had a new area code that no one trusted, so I changed it. You can login to your google voice account and make the change to an existing area code.
