At the start of the pandemic I assembled a Huffy youth bike what included a shifter. Out of the box the shifter was not adjusted. The brake pads were also poorly aligned. I got all of that sorted out and the bike has since been trouble free. I suspect most of the issues with these cheep bikes is a combination of poor/no factory adjustment + buyers who don't know better. In general a more bike minded person is likely to skip to something higher end. The sunset of buyers who can adjust these to work and want to save the money is probably low hence a higher complaint rate. If you aren't the sort who can tune a bike then I would be cautious when buying.

Huffy is utter garbage. Save up for a better bike. Dicks often has deals on decent quality diamondbacks for around $250. Will last you for years.

For some reason I can't find the link, but the reviews on this bike last time were mixed, at best. At $50, maybe it's worth the risk but not at $98.

Decent bike for flat trails. My gf rides one and she enjoys it. Make sure you do a tune up once you get it home.

Save up for better bike? $250 is 150% more than the posted deal. Most who would buy this bike is on a budget, and probably for kids who would tossed them around and outgrow them.

He has a point. It's a safety issue as well. For 98, you have to make a lot of compromises to build that bike. At the minimum, give it a pre ride tune up to make sure everything is attached and working the way it is supposed to.
