I am starting a lawn from scratch. Going to get some top soil. Will this be better or should I just go with some compost? Plan is to get topsoil, till it with existing, level and seed. There are a lot of weed growing in the lot.

To kill the Weeds use some pre-emergent such as tenacity which you can seed same day after applying. If you buy this seed mix also plan on buying more seed to go on top of it

If there's a lot of weed, you'll want to get rid of them first. You can use weed/grass killer like glycophosphate, but you'll have to wait several weeks before you can start seeding.

Once all the weeds are dead - you can put topsoil down to level, seed the lawn, and then cover with peat moss.

I'm assuming, similar to this logic, if I have grub damage (I do) that I can't just add soil and seed I have to nuke the grubs first. Fair assumption?

Yes. And be real careful with any kind of herbicide, especially round up or similar, which can do a lot of harm to your trees.

I like to use peet moss. It holds the moisture longer than just top soil. If you're doing more than a couple 2000 sq ft I'd also recommend getting a compost roller.
I have this one and it works great.

Seems like it's only for northern lawns in the summer. Maybe some southern lawns in the winter.

Q: What kind of seed is mixed i to this stuff ???
A: Our Scotts Turf Builder EZ Seed Patch & Repair Sun and Shade contains 89% Oasys Mulch, and a mixture of Bluegrass, Ryegrass, and Red Fescue. Our Scotts Turf Builder Thick 'R Lawn Sun and Shade contains 36.8% Gypsum soil amendment, 25% Sustane soil amendment, 23.2% fertilizer, and a mixture of Red Fescue, Ryegrass, and Bluegrass seeds.

Thanks. I bought one that goes with garden hose. Do you just spray them once or multiple times? The tenacity is the granule form right?

Neighbor's two month sod is bushy and the weeds popped on them are greener. Cant believe how strong the weeds can grow.

Neighboring two houses got full weeds. I honest dont know how much I would spend on herbicides.

Some of the weeds I know will give itchy if made skin contact. Dont know if I just buy 2 of those big cans from costco and do a free spray up on their lawns too. Will try talk to the new tenant, but dont know if they would care.

We bought this when it hit stupid low price in 2020. It didn't work on our southern lawn at all or our lawn was too far gone. Had to replace whole lawn later. Perhaps it was old stock or the southern lawn.. don't know.. hope it works for those who buy some.
