Solid deal, thanks OP! The 5000 is a tank, huge reel meant for big game. Just note that it's heavy (22 oz) and it has a manual bail. This had been the price when Daiwa redesigned them a few years ago, but we're long past that, so this is as good as it'll get now.

Absolute work horse. Love my 4500. Reminder the reel# spec is different than your shimanos and I think some other reels so double check how much line you need. If you want a crazy in-depth review and tear down see the link. I got mine from dickssportinggoods with a price match and a $20 off $100 purchase coupon. I think it's on the receipt of most purchases or an emailing marketing list.

BG's are serious workhorses. I have a bunch of 3500's I use on my loaner rods in Florida and they will handle 99% of the redfish you encounter. BG's are big for the size for example BG3000 holds 240yds of 20lb braid and a comparable Shimano 5000 holds 260yds of 20lb braid. I wouldn't pick up the BG5000 with the plan to cast it all day like I would a 5000 of other brands.

Nice reels... Unless you run braid on them. Wind knots galore. And yes, I'm an avid fisherman that knows how to spool them correctly, close the bail, etc.. Better reel is the Shimano if you're running braid. Otherwise, they work great with Mono.

That's hilarious because my friend put braid on his BG and took it to a lake, on his 9th cast got a horrible wind knot and he quit fishing that day. You get a wind knot on braid and it's pretty much over. I'm sure he would have loved this info before that trip.

Penn battle should be called the wind knot battle. I haven't had any problems with wind knots on the BGs for the past 30 years of BG iterations

Sounds like you are closing the bail by turning the handle. Only way you will get wind knots on a spinning reel. Instead, close bail by hand, making sure the line is tight when you do.

These Daiwa BG's are by far the best reels in this price range for saltwater. Penn and Shimano can't compete with the BG at this price point.

Edit: I shouldn't say that is the only way to get wind knots. Incorrect setup (line, rod power/action, and lire weight), casting technique, etc. are other causes of wind knots.

Lots of discussion has been had about these BG reels and wind knots. I close the bail with my hand while pulling the line tight. I use the right rods and certainly know how to cast. It just has Weird line lay. It was even mentioned by a few guys on Saltstrong that they are more wind knot prone. Shimanos never have issues. Their line lay is much better. I can cast all day long and never get a wind knot with any of my Shimanos. Maybe my BG's were defective.

I run braid on all my spinning reels but never go below 30 lb test even on the smallest reel, and don't seem to have much trouble with wind knots. Granted almost all my spinning reels are Penns. I just spooled up a Penn Battle 8000 today with 60 lb braid. 20 lb braid is so small in diameter it's like fishing with thread and is more susceptible to wind knots.
