You rinse to remove excess starch. Unless you need glued together rice for some reason it's recommended to wash short grain and calrose 3-5 times (or until water runs clear)
You rinse not just to remove starch, rice is disgusting in its travels across the world from harvest to your home. You should definitely wash all rice. How much you rinse is up to you but not rinsing at all is a problem. This brand claims to prerinse but I still wash it.

You rinse for both reasons (remove starch and in case of bugs, etc). I like sticky rice so I typically don't rinse.

I was not implying that this was the only reason to rinse rice, I was just stating a singular reason that was relevant to the other poster saying that they don't rinse.

By who's standards? It's a pretty well known fact that real Sushi is made with short grain rice no matter how its been made here in the US. Sushi is not Burger or Hot Dogs a home dish of the United States. Maybe you should have phrased that "Everyone claiming is not for American Made Sushi"...
Claiming American sushi is not real sushi is horribly short sighted. We have a LOT of great bars / restaurants and many of the world's top chefs in the matter. Yes our culture is different and diverged from Japan style sushi somewhat, no one is claiming it's traditional. But it's certainly "real sushi"

You can't change the substance of a thing and still call it the same. Its not short sighted. Its like putting a Vegan Sausage on a Hot Dog Bun they wouldn't call it Hot Dog but Vegan Hot Dog. I don't see what is short sighted on that, Sushi is not a native American Dish.

Because a recipe is not its origin, it is whatever the standard is at the time and that can change or diverge. If you applied this logic to many of your favorite foods most would fall apart because food origins are often not simple or created instantaneously in a vacuum. I know sushi is much newer than other foods but the point is true regardless. That is why it's shortsighted.

That is complete and utter nonsense and I think this is the point where I leave this conversation be. I guess we can agree to disagree.

Understood. And I don't mean to unravel the topic here, but from pics it seems bugs are roughly same size as rice grain, so it would be difficult to rinse away. In grand scheme of things, it would probably be tough to get sick form, as cooking rice will remove potential for bacteria.
The weevils float. Pretty easy to separate actually.

Best rice for the price out there. Makes OK sushi rice despite all the naysayers in this thread.

Wash your rice people. Lots of studies about how washing rice removes heavy metals and other contaminants.

I guess (real) sushi is only made in Japan then.

Ok I know these SD forums are a haven for armchair experts but I refuse to believe that there are suddenly so many rice specialists here
