If you are already planning mods, you are better off buying something that's already brushless and 4x4. Modding is a slippery slope and you want to start with a good roller. Personally I'm getting a hpi savage xs flux and calling it a day.
4WD is probably easier for a beginner. It will generally cost more. I bought the Arrma Granite 4WD[horizonhobby.com]for my son as his 1st car and it's been great. Their 2WD[horizonhobby.com] is many peoples 1st foray in to RC cars as it used to hit $99 or less but I haven't seen it on sale in a while.
Is this a must buy? What kit makes it brushless? 1st time buyer of rc, so sorry for the dumb question.

This is great entry level truck at a great price. Let the kids bash it and if they have fun buy a faster, brushless 4x4. But for the price this is a great truck to yank the kids away from a screen.
Something to think about: if you go 4x4, that's twice as many things to break. I've owned both. Yes, the 4x4 is easier to drive, but for ease of repairs, nothing beats the simplicity of 2wd.
I think you're less likely to abuse or break a 4x4.
My 4x4's see less abuse because you can finesse it around a track/obstacles, You don't need to drive it as hard to gain speed don't have to carry as much momentum to go over obstacles.
Is 4x4 the way to go then? I should skip this then?
Buy a Traxxas slash, 4wd, brushless and be done. It's really all you need. If you don't want to continue the hobby you can sell it. A 2wd brushed stadium truck is worthless, imo.
