Just realized I've put 350 hours into Hades. Don't know whether to recommend it or not. Too addictive. One of the best games I have ever played. Must. Stop. Playing.

Celeste is the only must-have here. I have 100%'d everything in this game+DLC except the golden strawberries, got bored partway through. Don't bother trying the higher difficulties or the DLC unless you have a better controller though- the joycons are atrocious. I used an 8bitdo. It is quite difficult, but it's overly fair in it's difficulty, and offers an assist mode if there's just something you can't QUITE get right or want to practice, and it offers it completely 100% judgement free.

Hollow Knight is a fairly mediocre metroidvania that thinks intentionally frustrating the player with poor controls, mechanics, and visuals intentionally lacking clarity is 'challenge.' Fanboys lap it up because they think it makes them skilled, when the only thing necessary to beat the game is simply persevering through the frustration, not actual skill. And I say this as someone that got every ending in the game, because I love platformers and metroidvanias and can't stand not going for completion, so this isn't just a 'git gud' issue that most criticisms of Hollow Knight are deflected by.

Hades is a good game, a great example of a roguelike, and genuinely challenging. It is _not_ for everyone, unfortunately. At this price point I would recommend at least trying it. I have not 100%'d, but I have beaten it several times. Do be advised there IS a certain amount of grinding that will be needed- parts of the game are story-locked behind multiple grind sessions, and a lot of your non-skill combat power is locked behind grinding. You can beat the game without any of that power, of course, but by the time you're skilled enough you don't need it, you've already built up a huge amount of it.

Dead Cells is everything Hollow Knight wishes its combat was, and far more polished. It also, like Celeste, has an assist mode, so if the difficulty starts getting too high in the later difficulty levels, you can adjust it if need be- try without it first though. If you get discouraged, drop back down to base difficulty level so you can feel first-hand just how much you're improving to regain motivation. I have not 100%'d this, but I have gotten every ending. I would recommend it if you like a challenge and like 2d combat and exploration. Ignore the timed doors- you want to explore EVERYTHING.

I've not played the rest, or haven't beaten them yet, so I don't feel qualified to comment on them.

I have maybe 50 games games in my backlog. Have a ps5 and switch oled. Just bought a steam deck just because it was on sale. I bought Hades for the ps5 a few months ago but have not played it yet. I get lazy and sometimes prefer to play games while sitting on the couch or in bed. Should I rebuy Hades on the Switch? I hear the game is awesome but I wonder if I start playing it and enjoy it more on the switch as it will be easier access.

You 100% yet? I'm at 75 hours and the dialogue from the gods is starting to slow down a bit.

Side note: Hades and Hollow Knight are in my top 10 favorite games. I literally beat Hollow Knight in 4 days playing like 12 hours a day because it was so addicting. Been longing for the sequel for years. Hopefully soon...

Both games are nice for pick up and play. Hollow Knight is more Metroid like where you go from point a to point b to point c then back to point a to do point a1 a2 a3, etc.

Hades is a rogue like where your character regenerates with new skills after you die but there's a ton of depth there behind all of the characters and things you can unlock. I stopped playing at 55 hours and started to play last week and there's still new stuff that is happening that I've never seen before.

They are both highly addicting if you're into those sorts of games.

Yes I would agree it's perfect for the Switch. Most of my hours are played in bed. It's heaven.

Ok so I'm not sure if I'm proud or embarrassed, but I've beat the game twice. This involves escaping 10 times. I've escaped multiple times using every weapon and am still torn over the best weapon to use. Truth is I'm actually still finding new ways to play the game, and it's more enjoyable than ever. And that's why I hate it.

Edit: oh, and I would say the game starts only after you beat it. I have 100% on one file and I'm at 50% on a second file.

I got Hades first on the PC and absolutely did not like mouse/keyboard controls. I didn't try with a controller though. I re-bought it for the Switch and absolutely loved playing it handheld and actually can only play it this way now LOL. I even prefer it over playing it docked because I'm so used to the weight of the Switch with the joycons attached.

Tldr: I love it on the Switch to play it portable. Overall I just didn't like mouse keyboard so PS5 would be fun too but Switch makes me way easier to play.

So I got Hades and Hollow Knight based on these recommendations, never played either before but have consistently heard good things... Any of the other games any good?

Bastion on sale for $2.99. Especially for those Hades fans, if you've never tried it I highly recommend it. Very similar gameplay style just without the rogue portion. The story is great and the music is spellbinding. The narrator's voice alone is worth the investment!

Ah, if Bastion is one of the games on sale, that is also definitely a must-have alongside Celeste.

As for the similarities to Hades, it's because it's made by the same company- Bastion was actually their first game!
