Depends on your needs. For this price it'd be hard to put together a comparable setup to this including a quality monitor, decent keyboard, mouse/track pad, respectable webcam and mic and speakers. This has it all in a very attractive package. Very slick.
Most likely this price is because M2 iMacs are imminent.

Hilarious to read through all the naysayer comments on the 2021 iMac.

Please, if you will, humor us all and put together a package for $1,000 that meets or beats this unit's 8 core CPU / GPU Passmark scores, SSD read/write speeds, 4.5k 100% P3 color space monitor at 218 ppi and 500 nits, WiFi speed of 760 MBit/s, two (2) Thunderbolt 3's at 40Gbps, two (2) USB 3.1 Gen 2's at 10Gbps, a 1080P webcam and microphones of this quality, and a six (6) speaker sound system that is equally as superb.

Also, don't forget the cost of a keyboard with fingerprint login and a mouse capable of multi touch input.

We will all be waiting for the cost of the i7 system or better it will take to beat this iMac at $1,000. You can try, but if you can't put the system together right here right now, well, then you simply live in a world where measurable objective criteria are meaningless.

Waiting endlessly for a link to something even marginally better in all of these metrics at $1,000 or less.

Oh, and don't worry, there will be no requirement that it be less than 10lbs or 1/2 inch thick like the iMac.

I think everyone misunderstands M1. The amazing benefits are really found in its video editing and other memory intensive tasks because of the unified memory and tighter integration. That does not mean it's more powerful in other areas besides that. In fact, Intel is more powerful than M2 (I'm using them slightly interchangeably because M1 basically equals M2 if not less), just M1 is much more efficient at other tasks as well where power isn't necessarily needed. So for light machines you really get a ton of benefits like MacBook Air competing with Intel chips in most categories. That being said, memory has little to do with it. Yes it's unified memory (just means it slightly alleviates the bottle neck not that it has 256gb of ram lol) so it's faster and can store more but it's not going to solve long term issues like YouTube taking up a ton of ram. Hilarious to see people going from 5 year machines and thinking it destroys windows. It does not, and benchmarks don't represent real world scenarios. If you're not video editing windows machines will keep up in nearly every aspect and 8gb will slow you down. Better to spring for 16gb paying apples premium and then you can take full benefit of apple silicone.

General question -- my kids (all under 10) have been using tablets. What can they do that is enriching on a full Mac that they can't do on a tablet? Is there a better suite of educational games?

imo It's unlikely they would appreciate the full mac experience until they have something more similar to compare it to, like a Chromebook. And even then they may prefer a laptop. My teenagers came up on Chromebooks and prefer mac laptops over our 27" imac for their work.

This is a good buy for someone looking for a great all-in-one at the 24" size. Anyone who thinks that is too small should pass. Obviously if you aren't an all-in-one person this isn't for you either. Otherwise go ahead and jump - this is a much better overall experience than a base mac mini of either generation with any monitor of equivalent size.

I have kids slightly older, but they had an old iMac to use when they were all under 10. At that age, unless there is something specific they want to learn (like basic video editing), I would say a desktop/macOS is most beneficial if you want them to learn their way around a desktop OS. It's close enough to iPadOS to be familiar, but obviously there are key differences that they can practice on that will help them at school, etc.

1. middle school and high school kids have MacBook Air from 2019 - is it worth buying? This is a second computer or should I upgrade their MacBook to MacBook Air 15 inch?

Yes, just Remote Desktop into your laptop from the iMac. Works wonderfully and no need to buy anything additional.
