Depends on your needs. For this price it'd be hard to put together a comparable setup to this including a quality monitor, decent keyboard, mouse/track pad, respectable webcam and mic and speakers. This has it all in a very attractive package. Very slick.
Most likely this price is because M2 iMacs are imminent.

Hilarious to read through all the naysayer comments on the 2021 iMac.

Please, if you will, humor us all and put together a package for $1,000 that meets or beats this unit's 8 core CPU / GPU Passmark scores, SSD read/write speeds, 4.5k 100% P3 color space monitor at 218 ppi and 500 nits, WiFi speed of 760 MBit/s, two (2) Thunderbolt 3's at 40Gbps, two (2) USB 3.1 Gen 2's at 10Gbps, a 1080P webcam and microphones of this quality, and a six (6) speaker sound system that is equally as superb.

Also, don't forget the cost of a keyboard with fingerprint login and a mouse capable of multi touch input.

We will all be waiting for the cost of the i7 system or better it will take to beat this iMac at $1,000. You can try, but if you can't put the system together right here right now, well, then you simply live in a world where measurable objective criteria are meaningless.

Waiting endlessly for a link to something even marginally better in all of these metrics at $1,000 or less.

Oh, and don't worry, there will be no requirement that it be less than 10lbs or 1/2 inch thick like the iMac.

Good luck!

I just feel like you're better off with a Mac mini M1 (or 2) and an external monitor (or 2).

Not true in terms of the iMac. It won't go lower than this.

Yes, just Remote Desktop into your laptop from the iMac. Works wonderfully and no need to buy anything additional.
I use Microsoft RD. It "works" but it's not really usable for any traditional task. You can basically remote into the Windows machine to do updates, start an app, etc. But you're not going to be browsing or doing any productivity work. Just too laggy. This is over a wired 1Gbps network connection between the machines.

Works just fine; nice three (3) monitor solution. $20 instant discount currently as well.
Tried this solution on my MacBook Pro M1 already, but man, the quality was trash and kept losin' connection. And when macOS updates, those third-party connections gotta catch up, leavin' ya hangin' for a week or two. Bummer, right?

See comment #27 and #30.

If you simply refuse to use the Cloud, or reside in a remote area, then simply get yourself a short flush mounted USB C cable and one of these babies:

https://www.amazon.com/Twelve-Sou...B09QRZ2DF3

Also, Apple 100% completely recycles their own products at zero cost to you.

Be informed.
The local drive is at 256Gig, it limits a lot of what you can Cloud. 256Gig is undersized for a laptop/desktop. 256Gig is an iPhone storage capacity. Period.

Personal claims are not proof.

What in the world is everyone storing locally that can't be in the Cloud and available instantly? Is it like a warm blankie that you just have to have with you and always close by Schroeder?

Don't get me wrong, I was right there with you, in 2003, and kept everything local. Two decades hence though, there simply is no need unless you deal with massive media files or use your PC for gaming.

If you live in a remote area, then the storage needs are justified.

This machine's not bad for casual web browsing, watching YouTube, or checking emails. Plus, it comes with a free keyboard and mouse, unlike the iPad Pro – I spent around $1300 for a similar spec and a smaller screen, only to get a pricey YouTube toy! 😂 but, if you wanna be more productive with it, it's not the ideal choice, dude. You'll need to invest more moolah.

IMHO, $1000 is a rip off... M1 8GB/256 mac mini is 300-400 bucks.. add 27" monitor for 100 bucks. That gives us the same value for half price.

8GB RAM, 256GB hard drive? This was sufficient 10 years ago.

Especially if the Mac mini comes with a usable amount of RAM & storage. My 2 year old smart phone has more RAM and equal storage to this.

Really pathetic, ludicrous specs for a desktop PC.

Normally I wouldn't agree with this type of rhetoric, because MacOS is really well optimized for Apple silicon, but you're right. Even the iPhone will have 8GB of RAM this year. These specs are borderline unacceptable for a DESKTOP computer...

Except your phone can't run multiple instances of full desktop productivity apps, media consumption and web browsing, without a hitch.

So what's wrong with your 2 year old phone?

Are the specs unacceptable, or is the experience unacceptable? I've used/own several of these 8/256 M1 Macs, and the experience has been great. I've used the base 8/256 Mini to push the 6K Pro Display XDR, using iZotope 9 Advanced, plenty of other apps, + browsing. No issues to report.

I never said the M1 with 256GB SSD and 8GB RAM had performance issues; the M1 is a beast. I said it is borderline unacceptable to have such little memory and storage in a DESKTOP computer that retails for $1500.
