Depends on your needs. For this price it'd be hard to put together a comparable setup to this including a quality monitor, decent keyboard, mouse/track pad, respectable webcam and mic and speakers. This has it all in a very attractive package. Very slick.
Most likely this price is because M2 iMacs are imminent.

Hilarious to read through all the naysayer comments on the 2021 iMac.

Please, if you will, humor us all and put together a package for $1,000 that meets or beats this unit's 8 core CPU / GPU Passmark scores, SSD read/write speeds, 4.5k 100% P3 color space monitor at 218 ppi and 500 nits, WiFi speed of 760 MBit/s, two (2) Thunderbolt 3's at 40Gbps, two (2) USB 3.1 Gen 2's at 10Gbps, a 1080P webcam and microphones of this quality, and a six (6) speaker sound system that is equally as superb.

Also, don't forget the cost of a keyboard with fingerprint login and a mouse capable of multi touch input.

We will all be waiting for the cost of the i7 system or better it will take to beat this iMac at $1,000. You can try, but if you can't put the system together right here right now, well, then you simply live in a world where measurable objective criteria are meaningless.

Waiting endlessly for a link to something even marginally better in all of these metrics at $1,000 or less.

Oh, and don't worry, there will be no requirement that it be less than 10lbs or 1/2 inch thick like the iMac.

Good luck!

I just feel like you're better off with a Mac mini M1 (or 2) and an external monitor (or 2).

I never said the M1 with 256GB SSD and 8GB RAM had performance issues; the M1 is a beast. I said it is borderline unacceptable to have such little memory and storage in a DESKTOP computer that retails for $1500.
No one here is saying that a 8/256 spec is acceptable for $1500.... but for $999, it's a great value.

So your defense to being called out on false statements about computers is to make jokes about mental illness? Wow.
You were in the rant zone…, high anxiety needle was tilting.

This may have already been said (can't read 9 pages), but they're almost definitely skipping an M2 iMac. It's the M3 that is imminent.

Doubtful. M2 is <1 year old and the iMac will be refreshed soon. Zero reason to skip, and M3 is probably a year away.

Knowing apple, M2 or M3 imac won't be cheap either. This is a great price. The config should be good enough for atleast few years.

Wouldn't MacBook Air a better alternative if 8g/256g is sufficient?

Price: yes
M1: yes

8g: no = I don't really understand how the M1 works, or, I work for a major media conglomerate and I'm churning out 8k video files all day.

256g: no = I'm a media hoarder cause the world will end soon, I live in a remote area (thus my "windandwolf" moniker), or I don't really understand the speed or practicality of having a portable external thunderbolt 4 drive at 40Gbps throughput from my iMac.

Retina: yes

24": no = because a laptop is never practical or productive by itself due to the limited screen size.

Wouldn't MacBook Air a better alternative if 8g/256g is sufficient? = I wasn't paying attention to the fact that this iMac is an 8 core GPU, that this iMac doesn't throttle down (like the Air) under thermal load due to two silent cooling fans, that the Air SSD crawls compared to the iMac SSD, that the iMac comes with a Magic Mouse, a six (6) speaker sound system, gigabit Ethernet port, etc., etc, etc.

Is the Apple care worth getting on the iMac? Looks like Apple care is cheaper through Costco?

Just so you know I work in IT, owning multiple Macs. So your hypothesis is very off. But good try.

I'm writing this from an iMac and can confirm a higher benchmarked rig can be built for less than $1000. Passmark lists multiple Intel i3 processors (currently $100-ish and even cheaper when bundled with a motherboard) that outperform the less-than-mediocre M1. If you need me to list out $850 worth of comparable quality parts and accessories for something that is actually scalable and not about to be obsolete anytime soon, I'm sure everyone else with access to the internet can do that for you.
