I've bought literally hundreds of these cans playing USTA leagues up through 4.5 level and never had a dead ball. Sure they're not as consistent in texture and go flat quicker than other premium balls but unless your UTR is over 9 (it probably isn't) then you probably won't even notice over the course of a 3 setter. If you're a true beginner and don't have wrist/elbow issues just buy pressure less balls until you're ready to compete.

you'll def know when you get a bad one. ive had ones where there's no pop after opening the lid. and ones where there's 1 ball totally dead out of 3. and now more frequently all 3 balls are rock solid and barely bounces even after hitting it for 10 minutes.

not saying other balls dont have issues. this is from personal experience with these penns

I don't know if a little cloud of luck is following me, or if the Costco balls have more stringent QC, but I have never had dead balls. Now, Penn balls are less bouncy on cool days and have less consistent bounce from ball to ball; that's just what you get with cheap balls. Never seen balls lose bounce in less than a couple hours, either.

One thing that might get away from people is, how the balls "feel" can be very different on different days. Some days the balls are lively, soft, and bouncy. Other days they feel like rocks and don't even want to go past the service line. The chances are, it's not just balls, it's probably strings, air density, moisture, and the condition of your muscles that contributes to it.

These used to be $24.88, but have remained steady at $29ish for the last 6months or so. Not really sure this a great deal for Walmart.

As far as the complaints go, I go through around a hundred of these cans a year and probably only get 4 or 5 dead cans. It happens, but I'm also not willing to pay $8/can for balls I'm only going to use once. I just always carry a couple of cans with me to the court in case.

A lot of people hates this. Which ones do you recommend? Any particular ones from Wilson?
If money is not the problem: us open or diadem premiere (both made in thailand with high tex felt).

I'd say it's a pretty good deal if you don't mind basic balls. 90% of the time USTA leagues play with these. I hate it, but the home team provides the balls and the away team has to shut up and accept it.
If you don't want to shut up, you could always supply your own new Wilson or Dunlop.
Just put your money where your mouth is.
I am sure the opponent won't mind.

You could hit up your local tennis club and get their used.
Then come home and wash them in the washing machine or a bin. Just don't spin them.

This is great deal if play with new balls every match. Not for people who like to keep playing with the same balls.

NO!

Pressureless balls are terrible for all parts of the arm.
Stick with good balls for practice until they become dead.
Use a corny keg (set at 25psi) or ball saver to help maintain the pressure in them if the felt is good.

Weird how tennis balls are one of the only things that are not effected by inflation. They were this price 20 years ago.
We should be happy.
In other countries, balls are expensive.

I bought Penn single pack recently from Target, they are made in Thailand, and they are much better than the ones made in China.

Well, inflation has affected tennis ball prices. Up about 20%. Making this price decent but these balls have gone down a lot in quality. And I've noticed balls from Walmart are even more prone to bad, stale balls. I used to buy balls for about $2/can pre pandemic even from Walmart (Dunlop ATP). I noticed a much higher defect rate in normal Penn (Penn pro and ATP still good). And a much high rate of stale balls from Walmart. Consider other retailers from local sports store, online like tennis warehouse or holabird. $80 a case for better balls is worth it IMO. I used to teach and coach tennis. I still buy balls in bulk for ball machine and personal training my family.

1 out of 3 balls in those cans are bad. I don't recommend buying from Walmart
How can a tennis ball be bad? I'm actually curious. I either put them in the dryer, feed them to a dog or hang them in the garage so I've probably let a few badboys through. Does anyone still use tennis balls for tennis?
