I was always really confused by the original 7900 pricing because it's essentially the same as the 7900x when doing pbo up or eco mode down, so the 7900 was significantly better value. Now I see the 7900x is only $10 more expensive (minus the cooler) the nominal value makes a lot more sense, so I'm not sure if amd will further drop the price relative to X SKUs or the prices will converge.

This only consume 65W power yet very powerful.
I got 7900x but want to switch to this and save on my E bills!
Highly recommended!!

Wow, looks like the 7900X is only marginally more powerful despite consuming more than double the juice.

Thought there would be a significant difference with the X, but I guess not.

Go with a 620 or 650 motherboard for my 7800 X 3d, and does it help to get 6,000 or faster ram?
Also I heard that there is a 10% overclock boost on the MSI boards? Is that only on the 650 boards?

Probably because he didn't read the comment he responded to. It was talking about the 7800 x3d. Not saying the OG comment was a perfect comment, just that he made an irrelevant angry response lol
The 65W refers to the 7900...not sure how you're interpreting that comment? The 7800x3d draws 120W.

Jesus, uneducated fanboys are the worst. The 7900x is 95% the exact same as the 7900, but the 7900 has its power limit restricted by AMD. They are the same chip, just with artificial limitations.

You can essentially turn the 7900x into a 7900 by just limiting your power in BIOS.

You can save a ton of power while keeping performance high with both AMD and Intel chips by limiting the power in BIOS, you dont need to buy one that comes from the factory with that already forced.
can you proof that?
I don't think if you reduce the power to 7900X to be 65W, you can get same performance as 7900.

I would go with a 650 board. 6000 is the sweet spot but its minimal performance difference vs a smaller kit so i wouldnt lose sleep over it.
I have an MSI board (the b650i) and i can tell u they removed the 10% boost with the latest bios. It was in response to the whole soc vcore issue. There used to be a PBO enhancement 1/2/3 option in bios that i no longer see with the latest update. i cant speak for other boards but i would imagine they took a similar stance on all others since the new bios.....at least for now.

I thought AMD's moving towards a more intel like process where new chip architecture would require new motherboards?
they plan to support this socket through 2025 . they are not going with a similar approach as intel. so likely 1 if not 2 more generations would be supported on this platform.

Not sure why you have the thumbs down, I was thinking the same thing. There are so many ways via the BIOS to get the X chips down to very low power draws.

So far I have both my 7950X and 7900X on Eco Mode @ 105 W. What further steps can I do to improve heat/energy?

Frequency limiting is very effective. The benefit of the eco mode in bios is that it barely hurts performance for these CPUs. Frequency limiting will hurt performance.

I wouldn't trust any hothead like "essix8" who starts off his rage-fueled comment with "Jesus, uneducated fanboys are the worst." He's just making stuff up as a wannabe know-it-all.

I'm not aware of any issues with the 7900 or 7900x.

FWIW, even though it affected a small audience, MOBO mfgs had new BIOS updates out within days of the initial reports.

Admittedly, I don't know specifics about the issue/solution, and I won't shill (for the fact that it happened in the first place), but at least it was recognized and was/is being remedied.

Having come back to build a PC after 6 years, the pricing models confound me. How is it that Micro Center can offer combo deals [microcenter.com] that give you a "free" processor (if valuing their ram/mobo at MSRP), or, at worst, a $200 7900x if you flip the ram/mobo for $200/$150 respectively.....meanwhile, no one else (newegg/amazon/etc) has come close to offering those deep discounts.

And don't even get me started on the (presumed) price mistake from 2 days ago when the 7900x combo dropped to sub $450 for a few hours!!!

If only the nearest Micro Center wasn't 5 hours away. I'll tell you this though: if they weren't "1 per customer", I WOULD have made that trip!

Eco mode can reduce power draw to 105W and 65W on the 7000X chips. Gamers Nexus has plenty of reviews and tests on them. They are functionally the same but personally I'd opt for an X chip since there is probably better performance than PBO and you can just flip the eco mode switch in the summer months or until you get better cooling.
