Completely different styles of guitar. The Gretsch is a guitar built to look and sound like the old blues guitars from the 40's/50's. The Ibanez is a guitar made to feel/play like an electric. I have 16 guitars, most of which are much more expensive than the Jim Dandy, yet I still reach for the Jim Dandy more than any of my guitars. It's just so easy/convenient to pick up and play due to it's size/comfort, and its sound really is endearing (as boxy as the sound is). That's how it was meant to sound. It may not be for everyone, but everyone I've known that's owned one has said it's the one guitar they'll never get rid of. Those that sold theirs ended up getting another because they missed it. That said, they often come with high action, since a lot of people buy them for slide guitar. I play side on it sometimes, but I prefer lower action, but a couple turns off the truss rod fixed that. The frets often need to be polished/played-in on guitars in this price-range, but that's to be expected. The string spacing wasn't a problem for me, and I have large hands (XXL gloves), but YMMV obviously.

Just yesterday I thought, there hasn't been a deal on a gretsch jim dandy in a while!

Maybe it's a sign?

I think the lowest it's ever gone has been $109. That being said I wouldn't pass it up at this price. These are excellent small guitars that are good for all levels of experience.

How does this compare to a Martin GS mini? Is it even halfway comparable?

Hamburger vs. Filet mignon. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the gretsch but these two guitars are on totally different spectrums and the price reflects that. I'm sure there are people who may even prefer the gretsch over the Martin.

Had it. Hated it. Strings are close together. Sound is pitiful. If u can play a parlor guitar for what it's supposed to do then great. But just to practice you can do better. Traded for an Ibanez tcy10 and it's 10x better

I'm in the heading, hate it camp. Not enjoyable going to this from a full sized guitar. General statement for full sized vs parlor so take it with a grain. But if u want a parlor….

Sold the Martin GS mini, still have the Jim Dandy, but actually I wouldn't compare a parlor guitar to a traditional guitar body generally saying. I have also the Alvarez mini jumbo and this is a fantastic sounding small travel guitar. I got also the Guild mini jumbo but still prefer the Alvarez!

The Alvarez also includes a nice study gig bag:

I agree that for a parlor and blues tones it's fine. But soooo many people recommend this as a beginner guitar. That's why I bought it. It's NOT that. For what it is, I'm sure it's great...if you play that way. I don't so it wasn't for me. On the bright side guitar center gave me 90% what I paid for it after having it a year

Yes, I saw I bought it for $108 in September... It's a nice small guitar, though I already have multiple scratches all over.

I was thinking of getting the Monoprice acoustic guitar. Is this worth $50 more?

Would this be a good starter guitar for my 8-year-old? I own a regular sized Takamine G acoustic and a Epiphone Casino but I feel they're too big for him right now. Should I get one of these or a standard Yamaha student guitar? Thanks.

As many mentioned, this is a parlor guitar. Fun to have if you have already a standard or western guitar.

A good choice for a starter guitar is a classical 3/4 guitar for your son. Check out Alvarez:
