Overpriced - Yes. I bought my Embody on sale directly from Herman Miller for 1k with all the extras. This was in 2016, I get inflation but the new price is beyond inflation. The same chair I purchased in 2016 for $1050 is now $2020.

Over-hyped - I still don't think so. Due to life happening, at a young age I've always had lower back pain. Sitting down in an office chair never helped either. I researched Embody and decided to pull the trigger on it seven years ago. After adjusting I've never felt back pain sitting down, at least not in this chair. I used to work at an office and sat in multiple chairs depending which office/conference room I was visiting and every chair made my back eventually hurt. A lot of these chairs were very expensive as well. Plenty of online reviews comparing chairs, mostly all reviewers agree Embody chair is great.

I work from home now, and the only thing I would like to have on my Embody is a headrest. Luckily "Atlas Headrests" have made a headrest for it. I'm just waiting for mine to eventually ship.

Would I buy an Embody again? Yes. Would I wait for a bigger sale before buying one? Maybe

Herman Miller isn't the only bad guy here when it comes to over inflating cost, Steel Case has done the very same thing. The Haworth Fern does seem like an interesting option.

FWIW, this is my first (edit: apparently second) post and I have the gaming embody and a steelcase leap from Crandall.

I have terrible low back pain in general and bought this hoping it would help despite owning the leap. After about 5 months, I'm convinced that it made my pain worse. You cannot adjust the lumbar and it must have sat in a bad spot for me.

I've retested with it because I really want to like it and the pain returns. My wife uses it now and likes it.

If you have low back pain, I'd recommend finding a way to test one first.

Their customer service was pretty terrible for a $2k chair company, in my experience as well.

For $600 I'd expect it to be self-propelled.

Steelcae gesture is smaller and being 6'3, wasn't for me. Again, bought mine at 550, and definitely wouldn't buy it anymore than that. NO WAY!
Was the Gesture $550 bc it was used or open box? Does it have the Steelcase 12 year warranty?

I tried out a bunch of ergonomic office chairs like the HM Aeron and Embody and Steelcase Gesture and Leap. I found the Leap the most comfortable but a new one is incredibly expensive at $1320.

I used to flip hundreds of Herman Miller chairs during covid.
Honestly, I would not spend retail price for these chairs.
Just keep checking your local market place and you can find a good deal If you are not in need.
I used to pay $300 for a 2 years old Embody and $250 each for brand new Aeron still in box.
Good luck

Meant I bought embody for 550 years ago. At the time I tried Gesture and it was decidedly smaller overall than embody.

Leap was actually more comfortable. At the time embody was cheaper so went with that instead

ehhhh while I agree the spend a LOT on influencers, they do their own R&D and I think they tend to be copied more then them borrowing from others. I owned one and it was too firm, so I sold it, but it was fantastic build quality.

I still am on their email lists and like the amount of licensed designs they come out with, but the price has shot up so much in the past few years you are 3/4 of the way to a HM chair with less than half the warranty.

Really give them credit for the slip covers too, pleather on any chair will eventually flake, I have gotten rid of chairs for that, and that allows someone to extend the life of the chair with what appears to be a very well fitting cover.
the Chinese don't do r&d, they copy and make cheaper by lowering quality. labor costs and no safety standards make it cheaper

Buyer beware.

I got a Leap V2 from Madison Chair based on a comment like this a year ago. Did some light research and pulled the trigger.

Turns out the chair I received was not "open box" as normal people interpret (meaning basically new, perhaps a show room model or something). Madison's definition is literally anything that the box is open. Moreover, mine and others have definitely received REFURBISHED chairs. Not only that, the chairs have often been over 5 years old. Mine was exactly this case.

So, not all is at it seems. Am I happy? Yes. Do I wish I knew what I was spending my money on and wish I knew more before buying? Also yes.

Good insight. Are you just systematically searching fb marketplace etc and snagging from individual sellers or another source?

My neighbor used to own an automotive supplier company in China and he finally had to sell it and leave there completely. He said the intellectual property theft there was just horrible and you don't have the protections there that you do here in America.

It's one thing to pay $1000 for a chair but a chair you haven't even tested? That's insane
