It's way better than a Chromebook. Make sure you modify the power limit and graphics settings in bios (watch ETA Prime youtube vid) to double the performance. You can't beat this value for the cpu and 16gb (soldered) ram and 500gb m2 ssd. Free upgrade to Win11. Limited bloatware. Refurbished units pop up on walmart for ~$260 of the 14" model.
I bought the 15" model last October for $300 (has numeric keypad), works great. The webcam is poor quality. Speakers are okay. The screen is a decent ips (no issues with it falling out like some reported in previous deal threads). They keyboard is nothing special. A tad heavy but it uses metal/limited plastic so build quality is average. The battery only lasts ~3hrs unplugged w battery saver browsing web/watching youtube/movies.
It has older wifi 5 & bt 5. One thing I noticed though is my HDMI output can only do 4k at 30fps, not 60fps so not really watchable. 1080p HD looks fine hooking up to TV though. I'm not sure about the usb-c output resolution.
It has a hatch in the back to add a backup m2 ssd drive (Leven JM600 1tb $40 off amazon).
Same price during Christmas season, several times. I bought in December & am pleased. Of note, problems w/ fingerprint reader was mentioned by several people & I affirm that. Repped.

$400 Acers on sale somes, A quality 16gb 512gb Intel 11th Gen at Costco
Thank you. I'm looking at the Dell 5490 i7, asssuming thats what you meant. It seems these come with both sata and Nvme and the page on their site doesn't say which one this has. It also seems quite heavy - 3.5lb for a 14", and the Walmart Vaio is 3.9lb for 15" and nvme, but its not backlit, and I'm pretty sure a Latitude is much better built.
$250 Dell with 32gb 512gb , Intel 8th gen in 15 inch - do you mean Precision 7520. which is 6th gen cpu, its also a desktop class cpu with high TDP so I'm guessing low battery life, and no webcam.
Got this two years ago, same specs. Battery had swollen when I left it plugged overnight. It no longer boots up. I don't know if it's still worth fixing or just trash it. Got mine for $350 so this is a good deal, just hope battery won't explode.
Instead I bought dell refurbished 7300 touch with older i7 , 16gb and 512gb ssd for around $209. So far so good.
They keep coming up on slick deals every now and then.
No offense, but the gateway is way more powerful than an 8th gen low power cpu...
Walmart has 12th generation I7 Gateway laptop on sale now for $398. Yes it's extra $120, but it's touchscreen, CPU according to tests is 20-40% faster, iGPU is also more efficient. I don't know if we can add more ram, cause this one has only 8gb (ddr4 or ddr5 nowhere mentioned). No reviews for this model anywhere yet.

This GW doesnt come with an auto shut off. Only a few premium laptop have auto battery health. you have charge them like a telsa.
If you keep it charged 30-80% the battery will last 5 years or more.
I installed a battery app to remind me to unplug after 80% state of charge.
My acer swollen after 10 years. My other laptop, battery health still around 80% health after 8 years.
Overnight charge or drain from 100% to 0% will kill the battery in 1-2 years like all laptops.
I suggest you contact gw for battery parts or find them on ebay, The maker is EVOO

Thanks mate. Long time lurker, first time buyer of Gateways. We shall see!
Consider an extended warranty. Luckily Gateway honored theirs and replaced my unit but the screen crapped out within a month or two. They gave me a different color replacement too and I don't know how the replacement is warrantied now.
Been looking to get something cheap to work as a Twitch interface. Been streaming from my PS5, but there's limits on it and don't want to switch fully to PC. Still have a feeling this won't be enough.

These are junk. Spend a little more it's worth it.
GW is a bargain bin part laptop, surprisingly good value as a B grade desktop and will last for 2-8 years indoor only.It will fall apart if you open and close daily, or use use as a travel laptop. Something its not design for unlike a biz tankpad.
There isn't any $220-$320 laptop on the market with recent gen Intel, 16gb, 2 ssd m2 bays
VAIO FE, $400 Acer Swift comes close in 16gb/512gb 11th gen
Its like those $150 mountain bikes object at Walmart. They good enough, as long as you don't go into the mt downhill, the cheap bike will last on a flat street. Better quality used bikes start at $200 Dell Outlet, or cost double new at costco with more metal and thicker plastic.
This GW is a super thin desktop with a battery, not a real laptop at this price.

Given that it's still very snappy. Have 2 of them and work just fine.

Build quality would be better on the dell though.
