I have this exact computer, in black. The first one I bought the webcam was trash out the box and did not work. I exchanged it. The second one I have now, I have had about a year. It's "OK" - I mean, for the money, the specs can't be beat but the build quality is not good. The fingerprint reader sucks and the webcam is a low res 1 MP camera. Zoom calls don't look good in lower lighting and when lighting is ample, it's "meh" quality.

I actually am having trouble where the built in display "goes off" for up to 20 minutes and cannot be turned back on unless I wait it out, or reboot the machine via force boot. I am not a PC expert, but did a OS re-install and that did not help. Since I can't get it to "mess up" when asking for tech support, I can't get it exchanged under warranty. I do have an AllState plan from Walmart but I already know if they cannot replicate the issue, they won't warranty it from experience.

Personally, I regret this machine but there are some in this thread who had great success. I have a Dell Dock from work but it did not play nicely with this compute. Maybe I am missing drivers? I don't know. Also, while the computer is not advertised to charge via USB C, I was able to use both a Dell Branded and ONN (Walmart) branded 65 watt USB C charger without issues on this computer.

Battery life, I don't have a lot of experience. I WAS going to use it for school work and travel with it but because of how unreliable the monitor was for me, I stopped using it for that and have it as a "desktop setup" in my office at home and bought another computer to use instead.

Personally, at this price, it's still a steal in my opinion but would I buy it again? Based on my personal experience, "NO."

I will say I got updated drives from Gateway support which helped a lot. It was hard getting a hold of them last year but the drivers helped with the functionality of the computer. Wifi is "slow" capped at WiFi 5. The 1st gone I got before returning had an Intel Wifi 6 adapter. Wish I had that one, but the webcam sucked and didn't work out the box.

The chassis bends easily and I don't expect this computer to last me a long time but for the money, it was a good buy. Oh - the speakers are pretty tinny so don't expect a theatrical experience if you're using it for that. Also, the keyboard is cheap feeling. I found some of my keys "stick" when typing and doesn't make for a good long term experience for writing school papers.

Just to let everyone know the ssd drive is sata. Only 550mb per sec transfer.
Given that it's still very snappy. Have 2 of them and work just fine.
For less than 300 dollars you dont even need to mention that really. I am getting one.

Man, I just bought a used Dell Lat 7400 for $250, but this is a smoking deal for a new laptop. Tempted to return the dell and pick this up....

How good are the gateways now? It's owned by a chinese company iirc.

BTW after increasing the power on mine it won't "boot". It turns on but the display stays blank. Can't access bios anymore either. Trying to figure out how reset bios without popping the battery now.

Not blaming anyone but myself, but a word of caution to everyone else.
It's possible you set the power limit or graphics settings wrong. You have to change the power limit to 30000 and 128 on all cores (scroll down on that page). I think you have to unhook the battery for a few minutes to reset cmos and get back into bios (stock).

I love the 7300, the battery last long enough (just lazy to charge or plug in all the time).
Battery life is the main determining factor for me since I travel
I bought the gateway, and it's nice for what it is but the battery life is about 6hrs only after setting a custom power plan. which kills performance.
without this power plan it seems like battery life is about 4-4.5 hours.

This is for general use, browsing, youtube, vscode.

Do you know what the battery life is on the dell?

Depends on what you want to do.

Gaming and emulation are way better with ITIS Xe… 8th gen igpu blows.
Usually a older cpu with dgpu MX130(2GB) is Better than latest igpu Itis.
MX130 on $200 dell gets 60fps on GTA5, 30fps on BF5. Itis gets 75fps GTA5.M2200 on $300

Same for an old 1080M, 2080M. lots of value for dollar running hot.

Itis definably better per watt.

$200 coupon laptop ain't bad

I got the same grade A for a bit more. Upgraded to 32GB once I realized it was only as single stick inside!

Did your 7300 come with a web cam privacy slide? Mine didn't. I have the touch version
NO, no web cam privacy slide with either of the 2 that I purchased. And again, have never been a Dell fan, never had a Dell, but have to say it was a lot of computer for just $200.

Lowest Brightness on wifi battery is...
Dell 7280 with new battery gets 12-24 hrs .
GW14 gets get 9-12 hrs.
Apple M1 gets 16-32hrs.

Max brightness cut battery life in half. GW15 4.5hrs, Dell 6hr, M1 8hrs.

Thats why I ordered the $130 Dell 7280 8gb for travel, i can always replace the battery for cheap new. already have GW14, but its not suitable for work travel.
The 16gb is only $170 with coupon.

Thanks, I did the battery unhook to get back in earlier today. Looked at that bios screen again, and I bet your right, I think I only changed one of the core settings.

It looked like the GPU settings were already set as recommended, so I didn't mess with that.

I'd really like to figure out why the USB C / Thunderbolt port doesnt send a video signal to my large ultra wide (but does on a smaller monitor I have) the resolution is supposed to be supported, but nada. Got too squeamish to mess around anymore for now.

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, about the only thing you MIGHT have to do is install Wifi drivers. I'm a fan of Manjaro xfce myself!

Same price during Christmas season, several times. I bought in December & am pleased. Of note, problems w/ fingerprint reader was mentioned by several people & I affirm that. Repped.
Bought last year as well. $150 in store clearance. Solid laptop and no issues with the fingerprint reader or touch pad (blue model). I don't use the camera so don't have feedback there.

Avoid charging via usbc, theres a reason why usbc isn't officially supported and never used in-store GW models. This GW has a loose usbc connect and bad overcharge protection which will cause shorts in the display, ram, etc. Someone on SD mention how they wiped the keyboard with damp towel and it instantly killed this laptop. Im not surprised since this a low bid laptop at best and highly senstive.

Use the stock barrel charger to avoid shorting the electronics. Keep it charged 30-80% to keep battery health, keep lid open so glue won't fall apart. It will last 3-5 years with extra precautions

Im able to play youtube 4k on this laptop on 500Mpbs internet. Switch to 5ghz 200-400Mbps. 2.4ghz is very slow 25-50Mbps. LOL

I also installed $20 anker soundcore speakers 7-14watts, amazing sound bass for a small size. Much better a $800 Apple M1 speakers

To be honest, they were much better before... although they were also more expensive. I have this laptop, purchased last year - quality is aligned with pricing, which is to say low. But I'm not complaining - I got what I paid for to let my 5 year old watch videos.
Why on earth would anyone buy a low build quality laptop for a 5 year old?
