It's way better than a Chromebook. Make sure you modify the power limit and graphics settings in bios (watch ETA Prime youtube vid) to double the performance. You can't beat this value for the cpu and 16gb (soldered) ram and 500gb m2 ssd. Free upgrade to Win11. Limited bloatware. Refurbished units pop up on walmart for ~$260 of the 14" model.
I bought the 15" model last October for $300 (has numeric keypad), works great. The webcam is poor quality. Speakers are okay. The screen is a decent ips (no issues with it falling out like some reported in previous deal threads). They keyboard is nothing special. A tad heavy but it uses metal/limited plastic so build quality is average. The battery only lasts ~3hrs unplugged w battery saver browsing web/watching youtube/movies.
It has older wifi 5 & bt 5. One thing I noticed though is my HDMI output can only do 4k at 30fps, not 60fps so not really watchable. 1080p HD looks fine hooking up to TV though. I'm not sure about the usb-c output resolution.
It has a hatch in the back to add a backup m2 ssd drive (Leven JM600 1tb $40 off amazon).
Same price during Christmas season, several times. I bought in December & am pleased. Of note, problems w/ fingerprint reader was mentioned by several people & I affirm that. Repped.

Yup. Works just fine on mine, too. As long as you don't expect too much, it's a nice laptop for the price.

Are you looking for a docking station or just an adapter?
Dell makes a USB-C to HDMI and a USB-C to HDMI+DP adapter. Those should work. I have the HDMI one at home and I will test it when I get home next week.

Docking station is another story. They're expensive. Dell makes a USB-C and a TB docking station. I've used the TB version with a Dell Precision laptop at work. It has its own power supply and runs its own software internally. Most likely the TB version will not work since I don't think the Gateway has TB. Not sure about the USB-C version. I took the laptop home every night and one time while connecting or disconnecting the usb-c, something in the laptop blew up then the dock stops working in any usb-c port. Funny enough, the USB-C to HDMI adapter still works. IMO, the thick cables in these docks assert more force on the ports when things don't line up properly. And the ports on these Precision laptops are too loosey goosey.

Got it, thanks for the quick summary. I'll just stick with the adapter.
This might seem like a silly question but to those that know specs better than me.
I made the switch from windows to Mac (after 30 years) and am enjoying my Air. I was going to sell my old XPS13 9360. Then I thought it might make more send to give my son a laptop for his own use (been on an iPad to date).
Should I sell the XPS and get this or just give him the XPS?
Any opinions appreciated.
Save the hassle of selling and give your son the XPS; it's an older laptop now that might be worth about the same as this Gateway.

How bright is the screen on this?
Nvm, found the answer: 200 nits.
Just received my refurb of this laptop. So far so good. Machine has been zippy. The trackpad you have to deliberate with clicking but not so bothersome to me. Feels little heavier than my other 14" in laptops but not significantly so. I'm updating windows but just wondering if anyone every upgraded the wifi to an AX card? If so, was it difficult?
Got a refurb from Walmart last summer and started using it at the end of the year. It worked great for a few months, then the screen would occasionally flicker. About a month ago, the screen stopped working (still lights up, but is just vertical lines--like a blurred image of the desktop). I hooked it up to an external monitor until I can figure out what's wrong (no, Gateway support, it's not the GD drivers)It may just be a bad connection, but it might be hardware failure).

Given that it's still very snappy. Have 2 of them and work just fine.

There should be a separate microcenter $25 off $100+ purchase
One had an issue after 6 months
Gateway wanted the receipt & serial number
Shipped at my cost
Sent back with same Bluetooth issue (they never touched it)
They sent mailing label (this time at their cost) and replaced with brand new one. No issues
Trachpad is cheap but I use a mouse
This is my daily and travel laptop
Great specs at this price point and it is not sluggish at all with many tabs open and streaming.
Tried some light games and functioned well.
Steam and others need to be disabled from start up because the computer takes forever to load. But I had the same issue with my Dell XPS
