Agreed. They need to cut this out with grocery store pesto.

They also go cheap by using almonds instead of pine nuts in many Pestos.

Just for my knowledge, do you look at other food items as well so critically? Like while eating out and buying a pizza or a burger or pastas? Or do you get critical only while grocery shopping? This is purely for research.

Even the Kirkland basil pesto has sunflower oil as second ingredient. I got some on my last trip. It tasted just fine to me but I don't know much about pesto 🥺

Is good pesto available at around this price or is it like super expensive. I was just wondering as I may have never had good pesto…

This actually says cashews, which is odd because they don't grow anywhere near Europe, let alone Italy.

good luck getting that shipped. Amazon cancelled not one, not two but now three orders of the pesto... One is understandable, but three times? Nope, done with ordering that one.

You can make it yourself if you grow some (easy to grow) basil. Get a pot from HD or Lowe's repot in a bigger pot with good soil and put it in the sun. Water it a bit, you'll have basil in no time. Most expensive ingredient are pine nuts which have shot up in price from about $10 to $30 for a small bag at the local Costco. We actually prefer roasted and ground hazelnuts over pine nuts...

Definitely. If the ingredients are there to be looked at I will look at them. I may still eat not-so-great/inferior things from time to time, but in this specific case, using sunflower oil over olive oil in an Italian pasta sauce is a pretty obvious cost-savings measure and does impact (negatively) the flavor of the product. Sunflower oil is extremely neutral while olive oil can be intense. Sure, cost will be impacted. Olive oil is about 5x more expensive than sunflower oil. However, that amounts to a few pennies per jar when you are talking the few tablespoons it takes to make it. The pine nuts vs almonds is a far more extreme differential (like 20x), but we are back to the minute amount actually present in these jarred sauces. Sometimes the good stuff costs wayyyy more, but you can try this for a reasonable amount per jar with EVOO and pine nuts:

Though, it will likely be cheaper at a local grocery store and you wouldn't need to buy 4.
