At $800 budget, Thinkpad/Elitebook/Latitude are excellent deal for student for the next 4-8 yrs. top class warranty support, easy parts, upgradables. I nick name them light tankpads at work.
At $400, Acer Swift, Asus Zenbook at costco. Less durable than tankpads, expect 2-4 good years for high school.
At $200, Certified used Dell Business Refurbish. Old tech old battery ,but great as a spare laptop and for kids in grade school or broke college students. durable like a washing machine. 20-50% slower.

Always get at least i5/r5 cpu, 16gb ram, 256gb-512gb ssd, 1080p IPS, 1 yr warranty
Avoid Intel atom/Pentium, 128gb ssd, emmc, 720p
Avoid the $250 Gateway/Vaio FE/Lenovo Flex/HP those will fall apart after 1 yr of normal use

Your math is wrong. After rebate it would be $450, not $350.

And the 5 years or less stipulation of the trade-in laptop makes the rebate offer not nearly as good as you think. Most people who have a laptop 5 years or less old will probably value that laptop over $200.

I think so. It'll definitely last 4-5 years at least. And you can upgrade the storage after purchase, if you need more. A 2 TB NVME M.2 2280 would cost $100-150.

Anyone have experience with their trade-in program? its only for the qualifying laptops here: https://costcotradein.com/tradein...qualifying

There is a SKU listed - is that just something costco assigned or its specific to the laptop for trade-in?

Absolutely. I have a Thinkpad I bought my Junior or Senior year of college in 2015 and I still have it today. I am a huge fan of Lenovos and fully stand by them.

^^^ THIS! ^^^ My thoughts are similar to RoarofZonda above. imo thinkpad has always had the nicest lineup of machiens, with professional level durability saved my bacon more than uce when the machine accidentally fell on the ground. You can flush out a sticky sweet pop/coffee spill bc it is designed to be very water resistant (the keyboard). To top it all off, trackpoint red nubs have always been the best choice when you don't have a mouse or you are too lazy to remove your hands from the keyboard. Totally sold on that trackpoint, because they have trackpad so you've got all the best options for control. I always find myself using both trackpoint and trackpad when working at the machine (trackpad touch makes for very easy up and down scrolling when reading webpages or work documents, etc

Does anyone have any thoughts on the whole lineup of 14" Ryzen laptops they have now?
There's 2 versions of the Thinkpad, and 2 of the Asus Vivobook

There's the one in the original post,
the higher thinkpad at 750 with a Ryzen 7 Pro 5850U https://www.costco.com/lenovo-thi...53690.html
Then's the 2 Vivobooks, one with a Ryzen 5 7520U for 650 as well https://www.costco.com/asus-14%22...51187.html
and the other with Ryzen 7 7730U and a full TB for 850 https://www.costco.com/asus-14%22...51794.html

Get a Costco Shop Card worth up to $300 in return for your qualifying trade-in device. Valid 4/12/23 through 5/7/23. While supplies last. Online-Only. Limit 3 per member.
For laptops $798 or less (including this laptop), the rebate is $200 Costco card, not $300. Please change your post, it is very deceiving, even if you just copy and paste from Costco.

Thanks, good advice. I need to find a suitable replacement for my old workhorse T420 (and before that T60, and before that T42, loved every one of them).

Should be fine. Ideally would want slightly newer CPU but they would be closer to $800 range.
