The pictures do not show it, but mine came with half inch rubber rings that slide onto the ends. The rings provide an additional, albeit small, space between the handles and the plates. This is sufficient for me to get my hands around the handles without knuckling the plates. Some of the comments indicate that they either did not receive these rings or weren't aware of them, so YMMV.
