Prepare yourself mentally this thread contains a nerd debate on something that doesn't matter to 99.9% of us.

This is a bit misleading - just because the format is lossless doesn't mean that the underlying quality of the audio and video is good - transfer and mastering (or remastering) quality can vary dramatically. This is why things like the Criterion Collection exist which specialize in exceptionally high quality film transfer (as well as extras etc.).

For reviews of 4k/Blu-ray I personally recommend High Def Digest.

(Edit: typo)
Streaming 4K is not the same as viewing a 4K disc.

Are these considered reference quality discs? How is the transfer for the OT?

All physical blurays have lossless audio & video, so inherently 'reference' quality. If you meant 'remastered' for the older films, then that is also true for the 4k versions, as those did have to be remastered in order to be released for 4k format. With that being said, IMO, the Harmy's Despecialized Edition of the first 3 is the best one for those looking for the original theater version in high definition restored by fans...where the studios have never officially released the original theatrical version.

Yeah, as Helicon_1 said, this isn't what someone typically means when they ask if a release is reference quality. Normally what's being asked is if the release in question is considered to be one of the best examples of what the format is capable of from a technical (primarily video and sound) perspective.

Given that, I would say films I-VI are not reference quality 4K discs for the format. Are they as good as the films have ever looked and sounded? Yes, from a technical standpoint (although many would disagree given the changes that have occurred). The recent trilogy is closer to reference quality, but that's simply because all of the original pieces are much newer and designed with releases like this in mind.

Dumb question for someone who finally bought a good enough tv to care about the quality of some of these.

How much better is this quality vs Disney+ streaming? Tv comes next week and Star Wars is the wife's favorite franchise. If I can wow her out of the gate she'll appreciate the purchase more 🤣

Unless she's an audiophile and/or videophile, she's really not going to be able to tell a difference when watching as long as your internet connect is good. What these definitely offer over streaming for someone who isn't into audio/video is the fact that you own the discs, they can be played offline (no buffering or issues with connections), and they come with digital copies you can use on your platform of choice that you also "own." If you were to ever not have access to Disney+, you'd still have the discs, including the digital copies.

If they're taking backorders for pretty much everything, I'm not sure why they're listing The Empire Strikes Back as sold out (at least for me as available Best Buy inventory, even for shipping, can vary by location).

Generally the video quality is the same. Audio though is on a vastly different(read better) level when watching on disc than streaming. So if you have a good audio system, yes, get the disc if you want to impress. If you have a great tv but use the internal speakers or a $200 soundbar then save your money for a decent sound system first.

If you don't care about the physical media, the 4k digital films are all 7.99 on Amazon right now and are movies anywhere compatible.
