If you have an account with NASA FCU, this is a great deal. However, if you need to open an account and transfer cash in and then transfer cash out - well maybe there are better alternatives.

1. Zero Coupon (3 mo) T-bills are yielding 5.2% (Cusip: 912796XY0). You can ladder these and get up to the 9 mos if you want. The extra 0.3% at NASA (assume $10k deposit) is worth $22.

2. Munis - I am seeing Munis (around 9 mos expiration) yielding 4% - these are tax exempt, so 4% / (1-your tax rate) to get after tax yield. These 4% therefore are close to 6%, but there is some risk in munis.

3. Is it worth it - so for each 0.5% increase in yield on a CD (assume you deposit $10k), you get an extra $37. If your bank has a 5% CD and you go through the hassle (I am assuming it is a hassle) to open a new account to get the 5.5%, is the extra $37 worth it to you. That is the real qs.

Just my $0.02. Peace

Credit Unions are insured by NCUA [wikipedia.org], the credit union version of the FDIC. And NASA FCU is NCUA insured: https://www.nasafcu.com/about-us

Been working through the account setup process now going on the 4th business day and I've been very prompt with submitting the necessary documents. Comparing that to my most recent CD with Savebetter there's no comparison, Savebetter was amazing and this is slow with some pain. I've gone this far so I'll stick with it but if I had to do again its not worth a slightly higher rate.
Thank you for the SaveBetter mention! (apparently they're now called Raisin.) They have some pretty good rates, but that led me to look into other CD brokers to allow for less moving money around, and I found that Vanguard (and probably Fidelity and Schwab) broker CDs with good rates too. So those are other decent options.

Not unusual. I think it was 1.5 weeks before I heard back.

It took about 2 weeks for them to approve my application ? I saw others said the same thing which is a bit scary. Has anyone used this bank before and have feedback how hard it is to deal with them ?

Just a FYI for Nasa FCU, it took them almost 3 weeks to open my account, the website is outdated and slow and thinks your logged out most of the time. After verifying my external bank account, I tried to transfer in funds like you would at all the banks and it says, you can only transfer 0 to 500.00 from a external bank.

I called CS and it hung on me, tried online chat and it says it's best to use iOS.. WTH, so really not worth all the trouble, really hate to see how hard it is to get your money back out..

After you've logged into NASA, go here [nasafcu.com] and click "EPN form". Make note of your EPN (account) number and routing number. Then arrange an ACH transfer from your external bank while providing those numbers to them. That will move the money into your NASA savings. Finally move the money to your CD which I think requires you to call NASA. I'm not sure if you can do the final part through their website.

NASAFCU does not mean federal credit union FCU means exactly what you think it means...the gal on the phone said, "you are trying to circumvent the system...we actually want to cater to folks who work or live near a NASA facility...ok I understand...so I went to my local credit union instead not as good only 5.25% but it took 90 seconds.

If you create a new CD account, part of the creation process will allow you to transfer from your savings account.

With the latest fed rate hike, do we expect yields to increase further on CDs?
