How the heck do they choose the movies for these collections? What is the sense in having sequels - Hellboy 2 and Pacific Rim 2 - without the first films?

It's very simple, these movies are all owned by Universal. Hellboy 1 was released by Sony and Pacific Rim was released by Warner Bros. It's somewhat unusual for a sequel to be done by a different studio, but it happens and it leads to strange collections like this one.

As for this deal more generally, there are some pretty good movies in here. If this came with digital copies, I would be tempted to buy. Serenity, Pitch Black, and 12 Monkeys are really good movies. Top-tier sci-fi. The others are just decent.
