Does anyone know if I have to turn on this receiver for Alexa to automatically play a song on it? Also how does this compare to the new Sony released this year for the same price thanks

Yes, Alexa works on this receiver. Sony which model you are referring to?
I know Alexa works on it. I just hope it can automatically play a song on the receiver without me manually have to turn the receiver on. Alexa play this song and it plays on it. I was looking at the Sony STR-AZ3000ES
I picked up an open box of Marantz 7015 for $1100 from BestBuy in excellent condition. Anyone care to provide comments on which one you think would be a better deal. I know both the receivers are great, but looking for someone who have used them and know something that helps me to decide. Thanks.
Can't stand this retailer. Will tell you your credit card can't be verified and want you to ACH them the funds, or kick it to some other "verification" group. So slimy. Do business with a reputable retailer with automated systems.

No Alexa won't be able play songs on the receiver directly. You can ask Alexa to do the basics such as turning your Yamaha receiver on or off, playing, skipping, pausing tracks, selecting inputs or turning the volume up in whichever room your product is.
For anything beyond those basic commands, you'll have to tell Alexa to invoke MusicCast. So you can say "Alexa, ask MusicCast to play...
STR-AZ3000ES is not a good match to RX-A6A, you will have to consider STR-AZ5000ES.
If you have money just buy, Marantz Cinema 50 and relax with your favorite drink and enjoy the music.

This is incorrect. You can setup this receiver as the preferred music playback device in a room under the Alexa app, and when you ask an Alexa in that room to play a song, it will turn on the receiver and play it directly on the receiver.

You can set it up where Alexa will turn on the receiver and play music through it. My 2080 does this. I love it.

It will be bluetooth connection, right?
To directly play, you need a Alexa built-in receivers or speakers like Maranta, Sonos etc
No, it will be over your network. Wifi or wired, since it supports both. The receiver will show "Alexa" as the input while it's being controled by it for music.

Your only experience may have been with the original yamaha Alexa integration. Last two generations of yamaha receivers (2018 model year or newer I believe) have more advanced Integration where Alexa is not on the receiver, but can control all it's functions, play music directly on it, etc. I have two Alexas in a common area and if I ask either to "play classic rock", my receiver turns on and plays said music. If I say "Alexa stop music" the yamaha receiver stops playing. And there's no connection between devices other than they are all on wifi. The Alexa devices still say "OK" and talk through their own speakers.

What receiver model you have?
I have a TSR-700 which is Yamaha rebadged RX-A4A. doesn't support direct play(I can't make it a playable device in Alexa app) but over musiccast it works. I have Sonos no issues with direct play.

Now, if Best Buy matches this price and lowers their open box prices accordingly, now we're talking…
