What about vs m2 ($999) or m2 pro ($1299).

Nope…check the benchmarks
You are wrong. This is the M1 Max which is much faster than a standard M2.

Too funny to catch him edit his post.

Rather pointless about M2 Pro mini a better deal. If you don't need the extra ports or the extra GPU then by all means get the cheaper system. Both will be great but "better deal" is relative to what you will use the machine for.

I hate not having front-accessible ports so Mac mini is annoying for me to even bother.

If I'm getting a Mac mini, I'll just get the $499 with Edu discount with 8 cores 4p/4e

M2 Cheapie is 8 cores 4p/4e (this will be faster than pretty much every PC in this price range -- waiting for gamers etc to come in an thread crap.

M2 Pro is 10 core 6p/4e - not likely to win a battle with M1 Max once stressed.

M1 Max is 10 core 8p/2e

My M1 Pro laptop 10-core is 8p/2e but GPU is less but I don't stress the GPU at all.

Similarly, a USB-C to DisplayPort1.4 adapter (Cable Matters makes one too) will also allow 4k120hz and the pretty MacOS "display scaling".

(Iirc, "display scaling" is not available on macs with Apple processors and hdmi 2.0)
This is the way. DisplayPort > HDMI

Wondering if this machine effectively support a 3-monitor setup with 4K resolution at 60hz for Thingorswim?

512gb of storage is a weak configuration nowadays. Even Mobile computing starts at 128 or 256gb. It would be nice to have every desktop setup start at 1TB given storage has gotten more affordable.
