I cannot find a confirmed setup where m1/m2 mac allows 4k @ 120hz thru an adapter. Reddit posts all said the OS throttles it back down to 60hz. Most adapter also say 60hz max

I do like 120hz but only on the pro14 laptop.
As long as you're going Thunderbolt to a DisplayPort Monitor, it should. Thunderbolt to HDMI 2.1 doesn't work.

-guy who bought m1 mini, m1 air, and mpro14 and macstudio, m2 air all at launch cuz I don't mind paying up for shiny new things. My m1 pro spec machines are so under utilized I didn't upgrade to M2 pro but I will get m3 when it's finally available.

I just sell my gear whenever I upgrade for a small loss but it's like renting the mac for a low cost.
I suppose that's one way to do it.. Apple devices do have great resale value.

I guess if I wanted to upgrade to an M3 Pro (if they're 'outstanding'), I could probably sell my 14" M1 Pro for ~66% of what I paid, which would currently amortize out to about $37/month. Otherwise, I can see myself keeping this for 5+ years.

All I see for sale, they include a disclaimer that even with the adapter you can only get 4k@60hz on a Mac (example below) . Do you have a specific model that says with does 4k@120hz on a Mac?

There are two variations of that. Both will work, but one needs a firmware update.

Yes. Based on what I looked now you are correct. Need to be direct TB to DisplayPort. I tend to run 1440p cuz my eyes are going bad so I guess it doesn't matter. Frown

Thunderbolt to HDMI 2.1 (via adapter) for 4K120Hz works just fine, I use it on mine. See my prior posts in this thread.

At this price point the m2 pro vs M1 Max chip doesn't really make sense the max studio for 1500 is a steal. I had both machines and returned my Mac mini m2 pro and kept the studio. I do both photo and video work.

Non members can purchase but at a 5% premium, correct?
The membership fee of $60 would be less than the non-member surcharge for this item.

I agree this is a better buy than the M2 Pro mini, but I don't think that is what we should be comparing it to. We have yet to see a desktop variant of the M2 Max and if they sneak something out in the next few weeks (or at WWDC) this deal won't look as good - It is only $300 off educational studio pricing. Not too many places sell the Studio outside Apple so I wouldn't be surprised if they were responsible for this sale and we'll see something new very soon.
