I basically agree, but with the following adds / exceptions --

We ordered one of these on this deal -- thanks OP! It should arrive tomorrow.

We have had an M1 Max Studio for about 8 months now. Our M1 Mini's with 16GB RAM just seem too slow now that we're spoiled by the Max Studio which we got for about 1700 bucks on an open box deal.

We may have shot ourselves in the foot because rumor has it that a 'space gray' pro Studio version with an M2 max or ultra or something CPU chip will be out at WWDC in June. We've played this game before and waited 6, 9, 12 months before something close to the rumored machine showed up. Plus, for our uses, we really don't need the M1 Ultra or M2 Ultra type horsepower.

On the other hand, a ~500 dollar or ~25% drop is something that doesn't usually happen with Mac pricing. It could be that Microsoft and Apple -- both of whom reported Windows OEM and Mac sales down about 20% year/year - ( in their quarters ended March 31, reported last week) are seeing a glut in desk/lap top supply and are not too eager to throw more resources into developing the category when they see more potential in AI for Microsoft and VR and phones for Apple.

Also, the M2 Mini stepped up version with similar cores and RAM and storage is about the same price as the Studio basic Max. If you accept the view that heat is the primary enemy of any electronic device, then for the same money go for the machine that should have better cooling - the Studio over the Mini.

Re M1 / M2 / M3, etc. The M2 seems to be about 20% avg. faster than the M1 for most tasks. Who is to say that the M3 will have nothing but the same rate of change, i.e., another +20% over the M2. The old rule dating back decades is that CPU performance has to approximately double before from one clock speed / core count to the next before performance increases are perceptible 'touch and feel' types of human, not software based, measurements.

Apple 'cuts you a new one' with storage upgrade pricing. We have our Studio and Mini M1' decked out with Thunderbolt drive NVME drives. They are very fast,and reliable. Plus we can swap them between machines, or take them off and let them sit on the shelf for archival backup. Unless we get into making feature length movies or something, our 512 drives serve us okay. Old stuff can be moved to one of the Thunderbolt dongle drives quickly and easily.


We could be wrong, but the above factors shaped our decision.

When comparing to my 2013 Pro (intel 12core 128 D700), this can run at least 4 times the amount of plugins -all depending which ones. For video, it eats up multiple lines of any flavor of 4k (265/slog3 etc) and renders quickly. Couldn't really do that with the 2013 and rendering was "see you in two+ hours". FCPX with a grading and plug-ins is no issue on these. It makes video editing mildly fun again.

MacOS with native M1 code is just a whole new level of efficiency.

Thanks, you're awesome and super appreciated. That's the Mac I am running, the can with maxed out RAM and highest core count... I built a PC last year and switched to Studio One, and haven't looked back, but miss the heck out of the Mac workflow and feel... I also ditched PT when they went subscription, thank you so much for the insightful response and help -- this helped a ton and I will pick one up!

anybody knowledgeable could you please suggest the cheapest recommendation (but good/suitable ) for a external HD (even 1/2-1 Tb will do) to hook up to this studio?

I would go for a 1-2tb NVME m.2 drive off amazon that can do ~3500 mb/s and a portable enclosure for it (40 gbps - I have an "ACASIS" brand one but there are others). If you get a slower drive, you can get the cheaper 10gbps enclosure). Very simple - stick the nvme chip in the enclosure and plug it into your computer via the provided usbc cable.

There's a deal for a 1tb samsung evo 970 on the forum now for $55.

THanks, this is exactly the info i was asking for. Regarding the enclosure, the acasis on amazon is 110 after coupon right now but I see other brand (aluminum) enclosure on ebay for 75ish. Is this a generic product segment where all cases perform the same or is it the case of you get what you pay for situation? TIA.

Do you use PC as well for trading or all Mac? Also, what are LLMs?

I am considering sidering a mixed PC and mac environment for trading and gaming.

What do you plan to do with the extra storage? If it's just storing media, you can even stick a SD card to expand storage. Otherwise, TB/USB 4 case that was suggested or even a T7 Shield or SD Extreme v2 will suffice,

I would avoid the 970 evo for an external drive, the controller tends to run hot in comparison to other drives.

Stability and firmware support is the key to this. Even with the same chipset, it doesn't always mean the implentation was the same.

Mostly 3-d models and renderings in addition to images. But it's not just for storage purposes, performance also matters because one of the major use-cases of the computer will be to generate/render 3-d models using (likely) blender. So I was envisioning the studio's internal drive gets used only for installed software while the external drive that we are discussing stays permanently connected (to the studio) and contains files that get routinely get worked on. So portability (to play media on a different TV for instance) is not as important as a setup that permits the 512mb studio to be used like it's a 1TB or more machine. Hope that explanation makes sense.

got it, thanks. but how do i determine which implementation to pick? can you suggest suitable ssd and enclosure to track? i described the studio and drive's envisioned usage in my previous post if that helps narrow it down.
