Yes, if one didn't have an original HUB, legitimate 911 charges and local / federal taxes and fees do add up. While I'm not overall concerned with OOMA continuing to operate as a company OVERALL, I'm more concerned now than ever that their legacy OOMA TELO and other POTS line hardware will be going away soon, so I wouldn't count on these devices being supported for a long time, probably safely 18-30 months..

Was that for a residential line?

Question for the community, I'm looking to cancel my landline service (and port my phone number) to a VOIP services. Right now OOMA's hardware is looking the best (even if it's obsolete in a year).

Are there any other VOIP services that you can recommend? I already have google voice as my spam/ solicitors phone number....so that's already used. Thanks

Ooma is still the only service that can add a Canadian number for a very nominal cost. Magicjack is very limited in its offerings, as the Forbes article lays out. For typical users, it's probably OK.

Article discusses business lines not residential line.

Most people pay around $5 a month in taxes and fees.

You're confusing Ooma with Obihai which uses Google Voice. Ooma is not going away. And Obihai will keep working until it doesn't; there is no set date.

I was in this same boat, and made the switch to Ooma. I hardly use my landline but wanted to save my number and I am ok with paying $5 a month (compared to my $100 landline). If you have an Amex offer, the hardware will come out to about $11 depending on your state tax.

There's not a $5 per month line....it's most likely the taxes that each user pays to the government. It's free to use OOMA as a residential user. Here's the calculator to figure out your taxes:

Can I make this deal slicker if I sell two of the HD3 handsets? Are the handsets permanently paired to the base?

Go for it! No, handsets are not permanently paired to the base.
