If you're not flying, then none of this matters, of course!
I'm buying it as a camera printer. Prints are much cheaper than the Instax.
Online reviews rate the Kodak dye-sub 4-pass prints very highly--better than Zink prints (at an equivalent, if not lower cost), and comparable, if not better than the Fuji instant Instax prints (that cost double).
The reason for not paying more for this larger Mini Shot 3 camera/printer is that the camera is reviewed by most as not being very good, and it is best to print from your phone photos. The larger size is a concern.
Since I usually photograph using a rectangular format, the 2x3 ratio of the Mini 2 Retro fits better with what I want to print out. The battery life of the Mini 2 Retro printer is rated much longer (double or more) than that of the Mini Shot 3 camera/printer (which many complain can only print fewer than 10 prints per charge).
The 2x3 format sheets seems regularly to sell (as seen in CCC) for about $18 for 60 prints: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B086KST5K5
EDIT: The 3"x3" sheets that fit the Mini Shot 3 in the OP's deal is also available in a 60-pack for $18: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B084MKLY8D/

I fully understand she can't had them out directly but it is a sacrifice she is willing to make for quality and price.
Reviews are making me rethink this, but overall most people like the camera it seems.

That, and the much smaller size of the Mini 2 Retro printer (3x5x1 inch), versus the 3x3" print camera, which weighs a pound (not sure of the dimensions, but it could be 5"x5"x1.5"), I think. The smaller Mini 2 Retro printer is more likely to fit in a pocket.
If you shoot square photos, then get the 3x3 camera. For horizontals, verticals, the Mini 2 Retro may better fit your framing. The battery issue is not insignificant, as the larger size seems to mean fewer prints per charge, which is a common complaint for the 3"x3" camera with observations you'll get fewer than 10 prints before needing to recharge.
EDIT: I also own the Polaroid Zink camera/printer, but found the larger size of that camera, as well as the camera's poor performance as not satisfactory. I also have the Canon Ivy Zink printer and much prefer its smaller size and ease of printing from a phone. I just ordered the Kodak Mini 2 Retro because of the many reviews comparing its print quality to other dye-sub as well as Zink prints.
I also did read the negative reviews for the Kodak 4Pass cartridges with some having alignmemnt problems--which is an issue with any dye-sub printer that requires teh print to repeatedly go back and forth within the printer.

Better to just print at Costco or something with pictures from your phone, way higher quality.
