Just to further clarify, the ones with an Intel Celeron processor that supports Quick Sync are way better for transcoding. The ones with the Intel Atom processor typically don't support this and are no better than the AMD proc at transcoding. I have a DS918+ (with a Celeron) and a DS1819+ (with an Atom) and there is a massive difference between the two. You can look up what processor a Synology NAS has here [synology.com], and then search for it on Intel or Wikichip to see if it has Quick Sync.

As I understand it, the AMD processor in this box, does not support hardware decoding. It will work, but I believe the Intel processor versions are a better choice, if you're planning to host a Plex server.

You could save money by setting up a computer and using something like FreeNAS.

What you are getting with Synology for the extra money is the DSM and ecosystem.

I'm pretty tech savvy, but went with Synology for the ecosystem and convenience.

I currently have a DS220+ and use it as a private cloud for myself and my friends. I also use it for my surveillance cameras and have a dozen licenses for Surveillance Station and as a central file server for my computers.

It has a lot of other capabilities that can be added.

If you don't need to transcode, yes. For transcoding depends on # of streams and the actual transcoding.

I've had this for half a year now, back when Amazon had them for 779. Overall great and easy NAS.

This is a great price - but I'm worried this model is due for an update.

Can someone please enlighten me? At this price, wouldn't buy a small computer or even a Mac mini with drives hooked up be a better value?

If you have spare time, check out how to setup a Xpenology. It runs synology DSM software with custom hardware. Imagine running DSM with Intel 13 Gen CPU and for sure it is costing use less than $720. It gives you better performance for Plex and much cheaper.

Transcoding on the fly, is where this box will suffer.

Plex has an option called optimized versions, where the transcoding is done in advance. Plex can be setup to make a lower resolution copy, automatically, each time you add something to it.

This comes at the expense of using up a bit more space, since Plex would then have another copy of each video, albeit smaller and lower resolution.

I have this setup mostly for remote access.

Plex will automatically pick the best match, reducing the need for transcoding.

I've been using it for a year+ without issue. I did go in and swap out all of the memory to the max the unit would support and added in some Nvme drives to help it.

I don't transcode, if you need that, get a unit with an Intel chip.
